The University of Copenhagen seeks to appoint an associate professor to the Global Health Section at the Department of Public Health to commence in a part-time position (30%) on 1 November 2024 - or soonest thereafter.

Our research

The position is based at the Global Health Section, Department of Public Health. The research and expertise of the Global Health Section cover a range of global health challenges and solutions, with a strong focus on health equity, especially in low- and middle-income countries. In addition to sexual and reproductive health and rights, our current research areas include global mental health, communicable and non-communicable diseases, humanitarian action, climate and disaster, as well as health systems research. We place significant emphasis on transdisciplinary and inter-sectoral research involving educational-, institutional- and /or research-capacity strengthening.

The section is primarily responsible for two educational programs; a Master of Science in Global Health and a professional Master in Disaster Management, both taught in English. The section’s faculty staff also teach and supervise across the Department of Public Health and the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. The section is a highly interdisciplinary workplace with great focus on collegiality, teamwork, diversity, and mutual support.

Job description

We aim to hire a highly motivated and dynamic associate professor with expertise in one or more areas of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for a part-time position starting on 1 November 2024 -or soonest thereafter.

The associate professor will contribute to the section’s growing portfolio of applied research focusing on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. The associate professor will work with colleagues in a collaborative manner on themes such as family planning, safe abortion, maternal health care, prevention and treatment of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, sexual education as well as contextual factors, health systems, and structures influencing these. The associate professor is expected to utilize different research approaches, including co-creation and intervention research, and to contribute to relevant educational and administrative activities at section and department level. The associate professor must be able to work independently, further developing their ideas within areas of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.

The responsibilities of the associate professor will primarily be to:

  • Contribute to the international profile of the Global Health Section and Department of Public Health by strengthening of the above-mentioned research areas and educational programmes
  • Develop and produce high quality, novel applied research outputs – both as lead and in close collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of colleagues
  • Ensure financial support to research across the section and for own research
  • Commit to a continuous output of publications/academic products with a focus on applied research
  • Contribute to the strategic development of the research profile and associated educational programmes at section and department level
  • Engage in research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Take responsibility in terms of research leadership, including guidance and supervision of students and junior researchers
  • Contributing to the administrative and organisational responsibilities of the Global Health Section and Department of Public Health
  • Share knowledge with society at large, including participation in public debate at national and international level.
Required qualifications

Furthermore, we are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following skills and experience:

  • A relevant PhD degree
  • Experience with different research approaches in the Global South, considering decolonization
  • Experience with master level teaching and student supervision
  • A proven track record and an active interest in capacity strengthening as well as participation and co-creation
  • Excellent interpersonal and communicative skills
  • Advanced skills and ability to work in multi-disciplinary and inter-cultural teams
  • Excellent English skills
  • Proven track record of securing research funds from institutional and/or private entities
Desired qualification

  • Experience in designing, implementing and/or assessing the effects of health interventions in low-resource settings
Terms of employment
The position is a permanent/fixed-term position.

The average weekly working hours are 11,1 hours per week.

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.
