A position as medical physics expert with an associated 5-year professorship in clinical medical physics with special focus on radiation oncology is available at Rigshospitalet in collaboration with the Technical University Hospital and Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

The radiotherapy section of the Department of Oncology performs approximately 50,000 fractions of radiotherapy annually to approximately 4,500 patients. We use state-of-the-art equipment including TrueBeam, Ethos and Halcyon units by Varian in addition to a ViewRay MR-linac. The unit also has 2 CT scanners from Siemens and a 3 Tesla Vida MR scanner plus brachytherapy suites.

The Department of Oncology hosts about 18 PhD students, many of whom have radiotherapy-focused research. You will be collaborating with this group and many research active clinical scientists from postdoctoral to full professor level to maximize the impact of the clinical/research efforts in the hospital. We collaborate closely with other leading departments in Rigshospitalet, including the neighboring Department of Nuclear Medicine, but also several surgical departments, radiology, genetics etc. The access to high level expertise across a broad range of medical disciplines is a particular strength of the hospital system in which the department is embedded.

Qualifications

We expect the candidate to hold a medical physics expert qualification or similar or have a plan for obtaining such qualification from the Danish Society of Medical Physics (DSMF). The successful candidate should be an established contributor to the international community of medical physics, for example through a focus on one or more disease entities, clinical developments and/or advanced technologies.

The successful candidate should have demonstrated collaborative skills, for example through key roles in multicenter studies or projects. Experience with statistical design of experiments and statistical data analysis is an advantage due to the broad supportive roles of the group of young postgraduate researchers in the department.

Finally, the successful candidate should have demonstrated the ability to attract larger peer-reviewed research grants.

Roles and responsibilities

Clinical duties will focus on continuous development of our radiotherapy service to our patients. The candidate is expected to strengthen Rigshospitalet’s contributions in the Danish Multidisciplinary Cancer Groups through own participation and through the support to Rigshospitalet’s radiotherapy staff. The candidate is also expected to participate actively in the development of novel treatments in the department and to help document the clinical value of technological improvements. There is a particular emphasis on improving the clinical value of the department’s MR accelerator and Ethos adaptive radiotherapy system. Due to the challenges associated with increasing patient numbers and limited staffing options, the successful candidate is expected to work closely together with the leadership of the radiotherapy clinic to establish the most modern treatments for our patients within these constraints on resources.

The duties associated with the professorship will include

  • Research including expectations to publish and participate in scientific communication
  • Research leadership as well as educational guidance and supervision of junior researchers
  • Research-based teaching with associated examination duties
  • Leading and supporting research grant applications from the department – as principal investigator and through scientific and statistical support to other PIs from the department.
  • Establishing a fruitful collaboration within the newly established Technical University Hospital collaboration between Rigshospitalet and DTU
  • Maintaining and expanding our research and development collaboration with our industrial partners, including Varian, Siemens and Brainlab
We value teamwork, and the ability to support peers in the department is valued highly.

Salary terms and employment

The terms of appointment salary and pension will be settled in accordance with the existing agreement between the Danish Regions (Danske Regioner) and the relevant professional organization of the candidate.

The position is a 5-year professor “MSO” with possibility of extension.

The application should be made to Rigshospitalet Dept. of Oncology as the primary position before May 17 (midnight). We expect interviews in June. One candidate will then be selected for the position contingent on a subsequent successful professorship qualification as evaluated by an assessment committee appointed by DTU.
