Do you want to be involved in the green energy transition? Do you wish to contribute to the development of advanced technologies for floating wind farms and are you looking for a career in R&D or academia? Then we have a great opportunity!

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled candidate to join us as PhD student.

We offer a multidisciplinary, international, and friendly atmosphere, encouraging creativity and teamwork. You will have a great opportunity to build strong networks with internationally known researchers at DTU and other universities as well as industrial partners. The present PhD project is sponsored by Equinor and thus provides opportunity for contact with their floating wind experts.

You will be affiliated with the Section on Response, Aero-elasticity, Control and Hydrodynamics in the Division of Wind Turbine Design. Our ambition is to develop tools for precise predictions of loads and response for the next generation wind turbines and farms. Our application studies involve load analysis of floating wind turbines, aero-elastic stability and controller design.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The overall research goal is to develop a fast linear numerical model facilitating simplified, yet sufficiently accurate, description of a floating wind farm for design of optimal control and optimal layout of such. The model will make out a linearized counterpart to the time domain Dynamiks.HAWC2Farm model. Key project elements are:

  • Develop a linearized aero-elastic wind turbine model with basis in the HAWC2 suite
  • Link the developed linearized wind turbine model with a wind farm flow field accounting for both conventional atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) turbulence and turbine-turbine inter-action through wakes
  • Link the developed linearized wind turbine model with a floater and its linearized response to wave and sea states
  • Facilitate control tuning using modern control theory and wind farm layout optimization

A detailed project plan will be developed with the supervisors within the first months after enrolment.

The successful candidate has an MSc degree in a relevant engineering field, computer science or physics and is motivated to specialize in control and response of floating wind farms. Candidates are required to have:

  • Dedication and the desire to learn
  • Good programming skills
  • Strong theoretical background
  • Knowledge of wind energy and preferably also hydrodynamics, flow, wake and turbulence modelling
  • Ability to present results in technical reports and prepare scientific papers
  • Ability to take responsibility for own research goals
  • Fluent in communicating and reporting in English

The successful candidate must also fulfil the requirements for admission to a PhD program at DTU.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 3 years starting September 1st 2024.

Application procedure
Your complete online application must be submitted no later than 31 May 2024 (23:59 Danish time)

Applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing all materials to be given consideration. To apply, please open the link "Apply now", fill out the online application form, and attach all your materials in English in one PDF file . The file must include:

  • A letter motivating the application (cover letter)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma (in English) including official description of grading scale

You may apply prior to obtaining your master's degree but cannot begin before having received it.

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, disability, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.
