PhD scholarship in microbiome and resistome analyses

We are seeking a PhD student to join the Research group for Bacteriology at the National Veterinary Institute (DTU-Vet) on the topic of microbiome and resistome analyses in pigs reared without the use of antimicrobials. The project is a part of a new multi-center research initiative on production of pigs without the use of antimicrobials in collaboration with Danish Crown, SEGES, University of Copenhagen and Statens Serum Institut.

Responsibilities and tasks

The role of the PhD student will be to investigate how antibiotic free pig production affects the microbiome and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in the pigs. The PhD student will use state of the art molecular methods in combination with classic microbiology techniques to analyse samples from the pigs. The project is highly collaborative, it is expected that the successful candidate will work closely with the large number of external partners within the research initiative.


Candidates should have a master's degree in bioengineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Experience in bioinformatics, programming, microbiology and 2nd/3rd generation sequencing is desirable.

The Research group for Bacteriology performs studies of infectious animal diseases caused by bacteria in livestock, fish, fur animals and wildlife. In addition, the section develops tools for diagnosis, management and control of infectious diseases. The focus is on the interaction between the host and the pathogenic microorganism. Antimicrobial resistance and sequence based profiling are major research focus areas.
