We are looking for a highly motivated and independent academic employee to support our efforts towards understanding the chronology of the early Solar System to commence 15 June 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Our research

The Centre for Star and Planet Formation (Starplan) is a multidisciplinary research centre focused on understanding the formation of planetary systems, including the Solar System, using a multidisciplinary approach that combines astronomy, astrophysics and cosmochemistry. The main focus of these research positions is centered on elucidating the timescales and processes leading to the formation of the Solar System, including the accretion and differentiation of rocky planets using a wide range of analytical techniques, including isotope geochemistry, innovative nano-analysis techniques for investigation of extra-terrestrial material and remote sensing. In detail, research topics include the Solar System’s presolar heritage, the formation, thermal processing and mass transport of early formed solids, the Solar System’s nucleosynthetic diversity and the formation history and evolution of terrestrial planets.

Your job

You will be part of a large research group consisting of Ph.D. students, postdoctoral researchers and senior staff conducting research aimed at understanding the early evolution of our Solar System. Your main task within the group will be to support our efforts in defining high resolution U-Pb ages of various meteorites and their components. This includes samples preparation and characterization, chemical purification of various elements in ultra-clean laboratories and high-precision isotope analysis using thermal ionization mass spectrometry. Further, you will be expected to contribute to and support the ongoing research projects in the group on an ad hoc basis when needed, disseminate your expertise to new lab members and support the lab management.

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic academic employee with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills

  • Deep understanding of the U-Pb decay system as a geochronometer
  • Documented expertise in isotope geochemistry, including ion-exchange chromatography and mass spectrometry
  • Documented expertise in scanning electron microscopy
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • Experience in research collaborations and demonstrated enthusiasm, motivation, flexibility and confidence
Desirable experience and skills

  • Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Sciences
  • Strong scientific background demonstrated by high-quality publications in peer reviewed international journals in the field of planetary sciences and cosmochemistry
Place of employment

The place of employment is at the Center for Star and Planet Formation (Starplan) at the Globe Institute, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Further information on the Institute is linked at https://globe.ku.dk and about Starplan at https://globe.ku.dk/research/starplan/.
