DTU Management’s Transport Division and the Joint Research Centre (JRC of the EU Commission would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting no later than August 1st, 2024. The successful candidate will join the Intelligent Transport Systems Section at DTU, Denmark for the 1st year and the Sustainable Smart and Safe Mobility Unit at the JRC in Ispra, Italy for year 2 and 3. The candidate will work under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Carlos Lima Azevedo, Assist. Prof. Ravi Seshadri (DTU) and Dr. Biagio Ciuffo (JRC).

The successful applicant will work on research focused on the understanding of detailed individual behaviour under Tradable Credit Schemes (TCS) and the design of such systems for equitable emission management in multi-modal travel settings.

We are looking for excellent applicants with MSc background on Economics, Behavioural Modelling, Applied Mathematics or Quantitative Environmental Modelling with the interest and ambition to pursue PhD studies in the field of behavioural economics and choice modelling.

This position is funded under the DTU-JRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership.

Project Background
The Green Token Project focuses on lowering externalities from transport through tradable credit schemes (TCS) for personal mobility management. Emission trading in demand management have successfully been implemented in other economic sectors. Existing efforts of TCS for mobility management reside in promising theoretical studies or less-realistic behavioural surveys. Understanding the behavioural and economic implications of such systems and their impacts on performance remains critical for possibly moving this solution forward. 

Together with our supervision team (with a background in behavioural modelling, demand management, transportation modelling and policy), the successful candidate will focus on the following research agenda:

  • Methodological, by modelling and understanding individual behaviour in terms of daily decisions, market related decisions including loss aversion, adherence, endowment effects and market gaming. 
  • Experimental, by gaining fundamental insights from gaming and field experiments for design improvement, realistic behaviour inference and environmental and mobility impact assessment.
  • Design, and test efficient and equitable new tradable schemes and evaluate and assess their impact on mobility, energy and environmental performances in realistic conditions.

The successful candidate is also expected to collaborate in a larger team working on the topic of TCS both at DTU and the JRC.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your primary responsibilities are: 

  • Conducting systematic review of relevant behavioral economics literature in relation to, tradable credits schemes, choice modeling in individual mobility and pricing.
  • Identifying potential behavioral barriers to individual tradable credits schemes in mobility and beyond.
  • Develop behavioral experiments to test different designs of tradable credits schemes in various contexts using state-of-the-art methods, i.e., on-line and lab, and field experiments.     
  • Exploring and utilizing different data sources to achieve a comprehensive understanding of human decision-making. 
  • Conduct behavioral experiments in controlled and un controlled settings.
  • Integrate the outcomes with other economic, environmental, and societal indicators.
  • Mathematical model formulation and estimation using statistical methods;
  • Code implementation and validation for these models in a modelling setting for alternative design and policy analysis.
  • Collaborate with researchers from machine learning and transportation in a truly interdisciplinary environment.
  • Co-author scientific papers aimed at high-impact journals.
  • Participate in international conferences.
  • Take advanced classes to improve academic skills.
  • Carry out teaching, teaching support and BSc./MSc. co-supervision as part of the overall PhD contract.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in:

  • Economics, behavioural economics, applied mathematics, quantitative environmental modelling, or related topics.

With: 

  • Good background in econometrics, statistics or probability theory.
  • Programming skills in Python, Julia, R or similar.
  • Curiosity and interest about current and future mobility challenges and behavioural nudging
  • Ability to translate conceptual behavioral models to its testing experiments and potential behavioral solutions is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Excellent communication in English and interpersonal skills for working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Willingness to engage in group-work with a multi-national team;
  • Able to work independently;

Approval and Enrolment  
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in the PhD degree programmes at DTU’s Department of Technology, Management and Economics. Assessment
The selection is made in two phases: first at DTU and then at JRC. The assessment of the applicants will be led by Carlos Lima Azevedo, Ravi Seshadri (at DTU) and Biagio Ciuffo (at the JRC).

Eligibility criteria
In accordance with Article 2a) of the GH Rules, candidates should, at the start of the employment contract with the JRC:

  • have the nationality of a Member State of the EU or a country associated to the Research Framework Programmes or being resident in an EU Member State since at least five years.

Salary and appointment terms
At DTU the appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
