Two fulltime post doc positions in Theory of machine learning are available. The post docs are under the supervision of Professor Kasper Green Larsen, Aarhus University, Denmark. The focus of the research project is on understanding and improving the performance of classic learning algorithms, in particular Boosting and Bagging, both in terms of speed and generalization capabilities. The project also allows pursuing other ideas and directions within theory of machine learning if the candidates have preferences or ideas from prior work.

Expected start date and duration of employment

The two positions are available from August 1st, 2024, or soon thereafter. Both positions are for two years.

Your profile

The research is carried out in collaboration with Kasper as well as Ph.D. students and post docs in the group. The candidates are expected to have a strong theoretical background and to be able to carry out proofs independently or with minor guidance. It is not expected that the candidates will do implementations, however, if the candidates wishes to do so, and it is natural in the project, then implementation work is most welcome. In addition to research, there may be minor teaching activities, such as presenting at seminars in the research group or guiding Ph.D. students in joint projects.

Candidates must have expertise in theory of machine learning and/or theoretical computer science. Publications at top venues such as COLT/NeurIPS/ICML or STOC/FOCS/SODA are much appreciated.

Who we are

The daily work will be carried out in the Algorithms, Data Structures and Foundations of Machine Learning group at Computer Science, Aarhus University. The group is headed by Kasper Green Larsen and also includes faculty members Professor Gerth S. Brodal, Associate Professor Peyman Afshani and Associate Professor Chris Schwiegelshohn as well as Ph.D. students and post docs. The group also closely collaborates with the Game Theory and Complexity group consisting of faculty members Prof. Iannis Caragiannis and Assoc. Prof. Kristoffer Arnsfelt Hansen. The project is funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council.

Place of work

The place of work will be Dept. of Computer Science, Aarhus University, Aabogade 34, 8200 Aarhus, Denmark.

Contact information

Questions regarding the position should be directed to Professor Kasper Green Larsen, email:[email protected]

Deadline

The application deadline is April 1st, 2024. Applicants should apply online via our recruitment system by sending a letter of interest and a CV, as well as indicate at least two names of references for recommendations.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference

If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline. Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.
