Job description

We seek applicants with a research profile within the area of movement ecology and spatial behaviour of terrestrial vertebrates with a focus on longer-distance movements such as dispersal and migration including also natural history, orientation and navigation, disease spread and surveillance, habitat and resource selection, conservation, and survival analyses. The research should be within the broader research programme of The Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate (CMEC) at the GLOBE Institute and should contribute to linking movement with the distribution of life on earth. CMEC has a strong commitment to also provide real movement data of individuals through tracking and experience with the fieldwork involved in collecting such data is expected. Experience within analysis and management of biotelemetry data (for example ringing and/or tracking data) and research-based public-sector consultancy is welcome but not necessary.

This is a position with a focus on research and teaching. Experience in teaching organismal ecology will be preferred.

Job description

In considering applications for the professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level, in the area of Companion Animal Surgery, with an emphasis on orthopedics and biomechanics.

Companion Animal Surgery is one of the prioritized specialist areas in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and the associated Teaching Hospital for Companion Animals at the University of Copenhagen. In recent years, veterinary surgery has changed dramatically. In industrialized countries, companion animals have taken a position as family members and owners expect a prompt high quality evidence based surgical service. Consequently, there is a high need and a demand for development and implementation of novel and advanced surgical strategies that are clinically applicable and can meet the owners’ expectations and support the welfare of animals.

The professor must focus on Companion Animal Surgery in general and must have a specific research focus on orthopedics including biomechanics. The professor will be head of the Veterinary Surgery Clinic at the Teaching Hospital for Companion Animals, including supervision and teaching of staff and students. The professor will be in charge of and manage specialized diagnostics and treatment as well as client education with respect to dogs and cats with surgical disease. The professor is expected to develop this area further with a specific focus on orthopedic surgery. The professor is expected to apply for external research funding at a level that supports the overall research strategy of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and the University of Copenhagen.

The professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

• Research, including publication/academic dissemination

• Research-based teaching, including associated examination

• Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers

• Leadership of and engagement in the Veterinary Surgery Clinic at the Teaching Hospital for Companion Animals, including specialized diagnostics and treatment of cats and dogs with surgical disease, as this is the platform from which evidence based clinical research as well as pre- and post-graduate teaching is performed at the Department

• Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate

• Academic assessments

The professor will perform these tasks under the general responsibility of the Head of Section for Surgery, Neurology and Cardiology. Required qualifications

The successful applicant should be able to:

• Document a high degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the development of the academic discipline orthopedic surgery and biomechanics

• Manage research and other management functions, e.g. engage in the university’s external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer

• Provide research-based teaching

The successful applicant must:

• Be DVM, PhD and authorized to, or being able to be authorized to conduct veterinary practice in Denmark.

• Have solid and specialized practical experience within the field of Companion Animal Surgery (e.g. hold a diploma as a National Specialist). Applicants with documented qualifications within the area of orthopedics and biomechanics will be preferred.

• Be ECVS/ACVS boarded/board eligible or hold similar specialist qualifications/experiences within Companion Animal surgery demonstrated per curriculum.

• Be able to communicate in Danish and English with clients, staff, students and colleagues.

• Show entrepreneurship and possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organizations. The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (2013).
