The University seeks to appoint one or more associate professors in 10 % positions at the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences to commence as soon as possible.

Our research

We offer a highly international, diverse and interdisciplinary environment in the Section of Comparative Pediatrics and Nutrition. We perform research and teaching related to development, disease and nutrition in human infants and children. Our work extends from intervention and cohort studies of infants at hospitals, over animal model studies in piglets, to in vitro studies on cells and tissues (mechanisms and –omics technologies). The wide range of methodologies requires interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork among group members with widely different academic backgrounds (from basic biology to veterinary and human medicine).

Job description

The current positions focus on developing research and academic teaching related to the neonatal and postnatal/growth periods. There is focus on understanding the nutritional, metabolic and immunological aspects of diseases in the above critical life periods, including effects of preterm birth. In addition, there is focus on the gastrointestinal tract, liver and brain among developing organs. The projects will require active participation in clinical trials and cohort studies at Danish hospitals and developing translational piglet models for relevant neonatal and pediatric diseases. Both positions will include some academic teaching and scientific supervision of medical/other students related to these topics.

In considering applications for the associate professorships, the main emphasis will be on the applicants’ abilities to document a high level of original scientific work on an international level within the area of Comparative Pediatrics and Nutrition, as described above.

The Associate Professors’ responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Oversee and guide research projects (especially clinical trials) initiated by University of Copenhagen
  • Supervise students and researchers (incl. PhD students) in their research work
  • Facilitate the interaction in work, ideas and personnel between basic research and clinical research at University of Copenhagen and at hospitals (especially Region H)
  • Help develop clinically-relevant research (animal) models of clinical diseases in infants and children
  • Initiate and support ongoing academic teaching in the area at University of Copenhagen
  • Initiate and support research grant applications based on the university position
  • Publication and academic dissemination
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate

Required qualifications
Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, each applicant must be able to document:

  • Experience with clinical research from hospitals, or other institutions, within the areas above
  • Experience with translational animal models of diseases in infancy or childhood
  • Research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an assistant professor/postdoc, but may also be obtained in other ways
  • Teaching qualifications and pedagogical competencies
  • Research-based teaching
  • A clear scientific publication record at an international level equivalent to Associate Professor
  • Experience with writing and obtaining research grants
The associate professor(s) are also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.
