Job description

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences is subdivided into seven sections and the associate professor will be included in the Section for Reproduction and Obstetrics based at Taastrup Campus near Copenhagen. The Section's priorities are clinically applied research in veterinary reproduction and obstetrics, as wells as clinical and didactic teaching.

Bovine biotechnology is rapidly developing worldwide and has become of significant importance to the cattle industry. By combining genotyping data with advanced embryo technology, genetically superior animals can be produced for breeding and production with a low generation span thus accelerating breeding programmes. The associated professor should develop and expand the department’s activities in bovine biotechnology, including attracting external funding for this. Hands-on laboratory work as well as project management and extensive external collaboration will be a part of the position.

Using porcine models for human diseases is also a research area in the department and the associate professor should support these activities, especially activities related to porcine stem cells and embryo manipulation.

In addition to research in bovine and porcine biotechnology, the associated professor will participate in other research activities in veterinary reproduction and obstetrics. The associated professor will become a part of the veterinary gynaecology team that supports the department’s veterinary hospitals.

The associate professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research and project management with the discipline of veterinary reproduction and obstetrics, including publishing in international scientific journals and other academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching in the field of veterinary reproduction and obstetrics, including planning of teaching and associated examinations of students
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of PhD students, Postdocs and Assistant Professors
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments
  • Attract research funding
Required qualifications
Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, each applicant must be able to document:

  • Applicants must have an academic degree within veterinary medicine (DVM) issued by a university recognized by the European Union. This must allow the applicant to practice veterinary medicine in Denmark. Applicants must include documentation for this in the application.
  • Applicants must be able to speak, read and understand Danish, Norwegian or Swedish as communication with herd clients, herd owners and farm staff will be a part of the job.
  • Research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an assistant professor/postdoc, but may also be obtained in other ways
  • Significant practical hands-on experience with bovine and porcine biotechnology methods
  • Teaching qualifications and pedagogical competencies
  • Research-based teaching
  • Proven ability to attract funding for research projecs
The associate professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills. It will be considered an advantage if the applicant has experience from large animal veterinary practice.

Terms of employment
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.
