The University of Copenhagen, advertises one or more positions as Associate Professor or Assistant Professor of Genetics of Human Metabolism to the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research. The positions are available from 1st April 2021 or as soon as possible. The Position as Associate Professor is a permanent position, and the Assistant Professor position is temporary for a duration of four (4) years.

Area of research for Associate Professor and Assistant Professor

The job advertisement is aimed at fields within human metabolism mentioned in the following: The position holder will conduct original scientific research on the genetic etiology of obesity, type 2 diabetes and related disorders. Their research implements a wide range of genetic and general epidemiological approaches to gain insight in the biology that underlies these conditions. Their work extends beyond genetic associations as they employ bioinformatic approaches and collaborate with molecular biologists to translate genetic discoveries into meaningful biology. In addition, they will assess the value of genetic information in the early diagnosis of individuals at high-risk of disease. The role of environmental factors on gene discoveries and on disease prediction will also be studied. The Assistant/Associate Professor will work with a large portfolio of data collections with high-density genotyping, including common and rare variation (from genome-wide arrays and sequencing data), to develop new research ideas and projects and to lead/participate in large-scale international collaborations.



The position as Associate Professor (permanent)

The Associate Professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of: Research, including publication/academic dissemination, research-based teaching, including associated examination and research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers. In addition, sharing knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate and academic assessments will be requested.

Required qualifications as Associate Professor
The candidate will document a productive program of research in genetic epidemiology, genetics, bioinformatics, genomics, computational biology, or similar as well as a broad understanding of human metabolism and physiology. They will have a record of peer-reviewed funding and publications and demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills with engagement in successful collaborative and multidisciplinary research. In addition, six overall criteria apply for Associate Professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Selection Criteria for Associate Professors



  • A PhD in Genetics or related field;


  • A substantial number of peer-reviewed articles in recognised journals, and a demonstration of intellectual originality and scholar autonomy notably as a corresponding author;


  • An internationally recognized research profile and a vision for developing their own subject area;


  • Participation in scientific seminars and conferences as a speaker;


  • Considerable teaching experience including experience with practical course development that incorporates knowledge of learning, teaching and education. Experience in supervising bachelor and/or master's degree students. Ongoing development of pedagogical and didactic skills, e.g. documented by completing a teacher training course


  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to articulate own research into societal perspective. Contributions to popular science communication;


  • Experience in active contribution to the organisational aspects of Academic environments;


  • Experience of participating and applying to grant for research funds;


  • Strong interpersonal and self-management skills. Experience in managing teams and projects.


The position as Assistant Professor (temporary for a duration of four (4) years)

The Assistant Professorship is a position with continued training. The main responsibilities are research (including publication/academic dissemination duties) and research-based teaching. In addition to research and research-based teaching, the position may involve knowledge sharing with society. Moreover, other duties may have to be performed to a limited extent, but a balance must be struck for the Assistant Professor to be able to improve his or her qualifications within the areas relevant to the position.

Six overall criteria apply for Assistant Professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Selection Criteria for Assistant Professors

  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to articulate own research into societal perspective;


  • Experience in active contribution to the organisational aspects of Academic environments;


  • Experience of participating in grant applications for research funds;


  • Strong interpersonal and self-management skills, including management of own projects.



Terms of employment
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The positions are covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee.
