The University seeks to appoint a professor or associate professor of social epidemiology to the Department of Public Health, Section of Social Medicine to commence 1 October 2021 with focus on social inequality in health.

The Section of Social Medicine contributes to the research in social, psychosocial and behavioural determinants of health and function, as well as consequences of disease. The overarching focus is on causes and consequences of social inequality in health. Researchers at the section employ epidemiological, psychometric, demographic as well as qualitative methods in population and patient based cohort studies and interventions. Collaboration on research projects as well as teaching with other sections at the department is highly prioritized. At the section multidisciplinary national and international research collaboration are continuously developed and pursued.

Job description

When considering applications for the professorship/associate professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level within the area of social epidemiology as well as research based teaching and supervision.

The professor’s/associate professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching and supervision, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Acquisition of competitive funding
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments
  • Engaging in the university’s internal and external academic activities.
Required qualifications

Six overall criteria apply for professor/associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, the successful applicant for a position as professor should be able to:

  • Document a high degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contribution to the field of social epidemiology
  • Manage research and other management functions, e.g. engage in the university’s external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer
  • Profound skills in research-based teaching and supervision within public health preferably with experience within social epidemiology
  • A proven track-record in attracting competitive funds
The successful applicant for a position as associate professor should be able to document:

  • Research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an assistant professor/postdoc within the field of social epidemiology, but may also be obtained in other ways
  • Teaching qualifications and pedagogical competencies as well as experience with research-based teaching within public health - preferably within social epidemiology
  • A track record in applying for competitive funds
The applicant is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.
