Professor of Biochemical Engineering of Plant Specialized Metabolism
Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences
Faculty of Science

University of Copenhagen

The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences invites applications from qualified applicants for a position as Professor of Biochemical Engineering of Plant Specialized Metabolism from 1 June 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter

The position will be embedded in the Section of Plant Biochemistry. Section for Plant Biochemistry carry out basic research across the spectrum of plant biochemistry – from the single molecule level to the field – and translate the findings into biotechnology-based solutions. The section consists of eight research groups that conduct research at a high international level within plant biochemistry and has an embedded state-of-the-art metabolomics platform. The Section of Plant Biochemistry vision is to be a world-leading and highly attractive research environment for scientists, students and industrial partners. It has long-established expertise in the chemical analysis, physiology, ecology, and biochemical pathway characterization of different groups of plant specialized metabolites. The section is described here: https://plen.ku.dk/english/research/plant_biochemistry/.

The appointed Professor is expected to have a substantial publication record that includes corresponding-author articles on top-level research journals that contributes in shaping the corresponding field of research. In addition to establishing his/her own independent research, it is expected that strong synergies with other research groups in the Section and Department for the development of methods and tools is established. The appointed Professor should have a documented ability to obtain independent and prestigious research grants, and to prove excellence and international leadership in an academic research environment.

The research activities are expected to cover, but not limited to, the following areas in Biochemical Engineering:

• Metabolic engineering of microorganisms suitable for functional expression of plant specialized biosynthetic pathways.
• Application of protein and metabolic engineering to produce plant specialized metabolites that are new-to-nature.
• Development of in vivo mutagenesis-based continuous directed evolution methods for the optimization of biosynthetic pathways.
• Development of whole-cell biosensors for the determination of plant specialized metabolites.
• Identification of and protein engineering of enzymes involved in plant specialized metabolism.

Applicants are required to have extensive university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies, and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher-training program for assistant professors is required.

The position is expected to strengthen current research based teaching activities in subjects related to synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, biochemistry, enzymology, protein engineering, and fermentation. The successful applicant is expected to be able to teach in Danish at the bachelors’ level within 3 years.
