(211-0103/19-2E) Associate Professorship in Biomolecular Sciences

Associate Professorship in Biomolecular Sciences
Department of Biology

Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

The Department of Biology at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a 6-years fixed term Associate Professorship in Biomolecular Sciences. The position is vacant from 1 October 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter, subject to negotiation.

The Department of Biology is among the largest Departments of the University of Copenhagen. It employs about 475 academic and technical staff and hosts research programmes and teaching curricula that cover all major biological sub-disciplines. University rankings typically place the field of biology/biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen first in Denmark and among the top 30 universities internationally. In addition to a PhD-programme, three BSc study programmes (biology, biochemistry, molecular biomedicine) and four MSc study programmes (biology, biochemistry, molecular biomedicine, bioinformatics) engage close to 2000 students.

The new position will be embedded in The Linderstrøm-Lang Centre for Protein Science at the Section for Biomolecular Sciences. The section hosts four research groups comprising 12 PI’s in total. The research spans topics such as protein design and engineering, intrinsically disordered proteins, protein synthesis, cellular protein folding and degradation, protein stability and protein misfolding, RNA stability, transcriptional networks, computational biology, enzymology, structural biology and NMR spectroscopy.

The Section has state-of-the-art wet-lab and computational facilities embedded in a cross-disciplinary research environment. Section staff currently includes five professors, 7 associate professors, four assistant professors, a fundraiser, eight laboratory technicians, and more than 40 post docs and PhD students that enjoy an informal, trusting and collaborative working atmosphere. The Section is supported by substantial external funding.

Description of the position
Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The candidate is expected already from the beginning of the position to participate with full load in teaching both biochemistry and protein science courses at bachelor level that are offered by the Section for Biomolecular Sciences. The teaching language of these courses is Danish. The successful applicant must also supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Qualifications/profile
The research field of the successful candidate should complement the ongoing research at the Linderstrøm-Lang Centre. The candidate should have a background in biochemistry, biophysics, molecular- or structural biology and have demonstrated ability to perform original research at a high international level. It will be considered an advantage if the candidate has experience with the generation or analysis of large (high throughput) sets of experimental data.

The Linderstrøm-Lang Centre hosts many joint projects between the individual groups, and highly values these collaborations and open-minded discussions of all ongoing projects. The selected candidate is expected to adopt these values. We are also committed to be a workplace of equal opportunities and wish our staff to reflect the diversity of society.

Applicants should have experience with university level teaching and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. If the candidate has no formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training program for assistant professors it is required that this training program is completed.

For further information regarding qualification requirements, please refer to the criteria for the hiring and promotion of permanent academic staff at Department of Biology at http://www2.bio.ku.dk/docs/BIO-criteria-for-positions.pdf

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Complementarity with regard to the current research focus of the section is of essence. Out-reach qualifications and ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Terms of employment
The position is open from 1 Oktober 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
