Department of Food and Resource Economics, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen invites applications for a position as associate professor within the field of Environmental and Natural Resources Policy. The position has its main emphasis on sustainable environmental and renewable resources policies, e.g. forest policy, marine policy, climate policy, and conservation and environmental policies, mainly at national and European levels. The department wishes to fill the position by 1 April 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Associate Professor will carry out theoretical, empirical and applied research, research-based teaching and public sector consultancy work on issues related to the above-mentioned fields. This may include research on national and international politics and sustainable governance in relation to, e.g., forests, wildlife, marine life, recreation in rural or urban environments, protection and conservation of natural habitats, rural, urban and environmental development, rural and urban food systems, and natural resource use and environmental impact, including in relation to the climate. It may also include research on the design, implementation and evaluation of policies and policy instruments. Research may also have a micro focus, e.g. on how policies affect participation in environmental schemes, roles of and interaction between different stakeholders, collaboration and contracting between public authorities and landowners, or how policies may affect environmental (e.g. in relation to the climate) or recreational behavior of landowners and other citizens.

Applicants must have a PhD degree in the above-mentioned field or equivalent, must have worked with research within relevant fields in a previous academic position, must have a solid theoretical and thematic knowledge, and have a good international research network.

Applicants are required to have solid university level teaching experience (BSc, MSc and PhD), including experience as a course coordinator, and must have documented teaching competences and be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen pedagogical training programme for assistant professors is required. Applicants who are not proficient in Danish or another Scandinavian language must be willing to complete Danish language education within the first three years of employment.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, contribute to public sector consultancy work, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments within the above-mentioned topical and methodological fields, as well as their documented teaching qualifications, outlined in a teaching portfolio. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered. Experience with undertaking policy-oriented research in collaboration with the surrounding society is considered an advantage. Similarly, experience as main- or co-supervisor for PhD students or Post Docs within the area is an advantage.

Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for an overall assessment of the candidates. The Associate Professor will be a member of the staff in the Department’s Section for Environment and Natural Resources. The section undertakes research, teaching and advisory work for the public and private sector within a range of issues related to the use, management, regulation and protection of environment and natural resources. The Section has key responsibilities in two MSc programmes and two BSc programmes, and has a large group of PhD students. The Associate Professor will be course responsible for at least one BSc course and will be involved in PhD supervision in relation to own research topics.
