211-0580 Associate Professor in Vertebrate Molecular Genetics

Department of Biology
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

The Department of Biology at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for an associate professorship in Vertebrate Molecular Genetics. The position is to be filled by 1 December 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter, subject to negotiation.
The Department of Biology is among the largest Departments of the University of Copenhagen. It employs about 475 academic and technical staff and hosts research programmes and teaching curricula that cover all major biological sub-disciplines. University rankings typically place the field of biology/biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen first in Denmark and among the top 30 universities internationally. In addition to a PhD-programme, three BSc study programmes (biology, biochemistry, molecular biomedicine) and four MSc study programmes (biology, biochemistry, molecular biomedicine, bioinformatics) engage close to 2000 students.

The new associated professorship will be embedded in the Section for Functional Genomics. The Section's research is aimed at understanding the expression, regulation and propagation of genomes using suitable model organisms. As of particular relevance for the open position, one research area addresses the molecular genetic mechanisms that underlie genome integrity maintenance with relevant links to human genetic diseases such as cancer, neurodegeneration, premature aging and infertility.

The Section has state-of-the-art facilities, including DNA laboratories, a cell culture laboratory, and advanced microscopy facilities. Section staff currently includes six full professors, five associate professors, five technicians, and more than 30 post docs and PhD students that enjoy an informal, trusting and collaborative working atmosphere. The Section is supported by substantial external funding.

Description of the position
The appointee is expected to take a leading role in the establishment of an externally funded research programme in vertebrate molecular genetics, and to develop a network of national and international collaborations. She/he is expected to work experimentally with basic aspects of vertebrate genome stability, and have interdisciplinary interests that could lead to collaboration with the department's complementary research programmes in cell biology, physiology, neurobiology, bioinformatics and/or protein science. Duties also include teaching and supervision of students at the undergraduate, graduate and PhD-levels, with prime course assignments in the field of vertebrate experimental genetics and molecular biology, as well as some management tasks requested by the Department.

Applicants should have a scientific background within molecular biology and genetics. A significant track-record of successful external research funding as well as a significant publication record in high-level, international, peer-reviewed ISI journals is required. Candidates are also required to have documented university level competencies in delivering high-quality undergraduate/graduate teaching and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme is necessary. Finally, candidates are expected to have managerial and out-reach qualifications.

For further information regarding qualification requirements, please refer to the criteria for the hiring and promotion of permanent academic staff at Department of Biology at

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.
