4+4 PhD Position in Computer Vision for Robotic Grasping

SDU Robotics, Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark, invites candidates to apply for a 4+4 PhD fellowship, starting 1. September 2019.

The candidate will develop new solutions based on machine learning – with a particular focus on deep learning – for object recognition and pose estimation from visual data, with the end goal of enabling reliable robotic grasping. The applicant will do research in the following areas, among others:
• Simulation-based generation of training data sets by techniques such as domain randomization, data augmentation, style transfer, etc.
• Proposal-based pose estimation based on image, RGB-D, and point cloud data using e.g. deep neural networks.
• Object-specific grasp proposals from visual data for robotic picking using learning-based approaches.

The candidate must have a BSc in robotic systems engineering or a comparable education and must have had introductory courses or approved study activities in the following areas:
• Statistics.
• Numerical methods.
• Kinematic modeling of robot manipulators.
• Image processing.
• 3D computer vision.
• Deep learning for computer vision, including convolutional neural networks.

In addition to that, knowledge of the following topics are an advantage:
• Classical descriptor-based visual pose estimation methods.
• Reinforcement learning.

It is a requirement, that the candidate is enrolled in a Master's programme (kandidatuddannelse) at the Faculty of Engineering and has completed the first year at the time for enrollment.

The 4+4 PhD fellowship programme is divided into a 22 months grant period followed by an employment period. When the master's degree (kandidatuddannelse) is achieved and you as least have attained a grad of 10 (Danish scale), you will be employed at the same terms as a 3-year PhD fellowship. 

The enrollment and employment will cease without further notice at the end of the 4-year period. 

Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

The successful candidate will be enrolled at SDU in accordance with Faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).
