A PhD fellowship in epitope-based vaccinology at Centre for Medical Parasitology (CMP), The Department of Immunology and Microbiology (ISIM), Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

The Department of Immunology and Microbiology (ISIM) invites applicants for a 3 year Phd fellowship in epitope based malaria vaccinology. The fellowship is available from 1st of March 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.  
Job description 
The PhD fellow will be a part of the EPITOPE team. The team’s research is focused on the use of monoclonal antibodies for epitope-based vaccinology and conducted in close collaboration with researchers at University of Oxford, The Sanger Institute in Cambridge as well as University of Ghana. During this fellowship, protective antibodies against essential antigens involved in Plasmodium falciparum malaria invasion into red blood cells will be developed, and protein constructs of the antibody epitopes investigated as malaria vaccine candidates.  
Your key tasks: 

  • Carry out independent research under supervision 
  • Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points 
  • Participate in active research environments  
  • An obligation to conduct some undergraduate teaching and associated examinations or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project 
  • Write a PhD thesis on the grounds of your project 
The project will be supervised by Associate Professor Lea Barfod.  
Scientific environment 
The research at CMP is mainly focused on malaria and predominantly supported by external grants. All activities are organised in thematically defined teams, each led by a senior scientist. CMP is part of a well-established international scientific network, composed of scientist in Europe, Africa, America and Australia. More than 60 scientists and technicians are affiliated at CMP. A large proportion of these are engaged in graduate as well as postgraduate training. 
Required qualifications  
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project.  
We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong background in/experience of:  
B cell immunology, Recombinant protein expression in HEK cells, Cloning and protein engineering, phage display library technology as well as. 
Other selection criteria considered important: 
  • Fluency in English 
  • The grade point average achieved 
  • Strong motivation and excellent scientific skills 
  • Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD program 
  • Previous publications, especially first author publications in peer reviewed journals 
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.

Terms of employment:  
The successful PhD candidate will be offered a full-time position for a period of three years, contingent on a satisfactory performance, with the specific intent that it results in a PhD degree and scientific publications.  
It is a prerequisite for the appointment as a PhD fellow that the person concerned can be registered as a PhD fellow according to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Executive Order no 18 of 14.
