A two-year Postdoc in interfacing TMS with EEG for state-dependent brain stimulation

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is gaining importance as a therapeutic tool to treat brain diseases, but in most interventional TMS studies the stimulation ignores the state of the brain and the impact of the TMS on the brain. Interfacing TMS and EEG can overcome this problem.

Do you want to become a leading expert in combining EEG with TMS? Would you like to advance current methodology to read-out electrical brain activity to inform TMS? Would you like to improve the speed and quality of EEG analyses methods to inform TMS interventions at DRCMR? Your daily tasks would include experimental and analysis methods development; improving EEG data acquisition methods in conjunction with TMS; advancing analysis pipelines of the functional brain responses evoked by TMS in the brain; real time signal processing of EEG for state-dependent TMS and closed loop applications.

About us:

The Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance (DRCMR) is one of the leading research centers for biomedical MRI in Europe (www.drcmr.dk). Our mission is to triangulate MR physics, basic physiology, and clinical research. Approximately 70 researchers from a diverse range of disciplines are currently pursuing basic and clinically applied MR, electrophysiology and brain stimulation research with a focus on structural, functional, and metabolic MRI of the human brain and its disorders.

The DRCMR is embedded in the Center for Functional and Diagnostic Imaging and Research, a large diagnostic imaging department including all biomedical imaging modalities at Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre.

The position:

You will be employed as a postdoc for a two-year period at the Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance where you will be part of the EEG group. You will mainly work on the project Precision-BCT funded by Innovation Fund Denmark.

As a postdoc you will have close interaction with DRCMR-researchers from a great variety of disciplines and with collaborators as well as clinicians. We act in concert and you are never alone with your tasks.

Your daily tasks will vary according to the flow of the projects, but will mainly be centered around:

  • support of ongoing electrophysiology studies, mainly related to the combination of EEG and TMS
  • development and testing of data analysis methods with a focus on real-time recording and analysis
  • analyzing EEG data, from pre-processing to statistics
  • using real-time EEG recordings to extract brain states to inform the timing of TMS delivery
  • acquiring and analyzing other electrophysiological signals (for example electromyography, electrooculography and others)
  • engaging in teaching, knowledge dissemination, and publication of results in international, recognized scientific journals

Your profile:

You should be a data analysis expert with most of the following qualifications:

  • a PhD degree or corresponding qualification in engineering, neuroscience, neurophysiology, computer science or a related field.
  • background and proficiency in EEG data processing and analyses
  • experience with data acquisition, pre-processing and statistical analysis
  • experience with TMS/EEG integration
  • proficiency regarding EEG software and hardware
  • previous experience in real-time EEG analysis is a plus
  • strong programming skills in MATLAB and/or Python

Starting date: is expected to be in November 2020 or as soon as possible.

Salary and Terms of Employment

You will be employed as a postdoc for a period of 24 months with good possibilities of extension. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Regions (Danske Regioner) and the relevant professional organization. The salary depends on background education and seniority. Further, supplements can be negotiated. Note that candidates coming from abroad may be eligible for tax reductions. The position is open for candidates of all nationalities.

We see diversity as strength and encourage all persons regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, disabilities or religion to apply.

Applications should include a cover letter, CV and list of publications. Applications must be submitted on-line through the RegionH job portal.

Application deadline: September 17th, 2020 at 08:00 (CET)
