Academic position on the microbiology of self-healing cementitious materials at the Section for Microbiology at Aarhus University, Denmark

Applications are invited for a 24-months postdoctoral scientist position to develop and characterize microbially-based self-healing cementitious materials.
The starting date is 1 February 2021 or as agreed upon.

Job description
Concrete is the world’s most durable, reliable and economical construction material with an annual consumption in volume by society only surpassed by water. We seek to develop self-healing cementitious materials that increase the durability of concrete structures installed in the seabed. Our approach is based on microbially-induced calcium carbonate precipitation, where bacterial endospores are encapsulated into the cement. When cracks occur, water will penetrate and induce the endospores to germinate and grow, thereby producing CO2 which in the alkaline, Ca-rich environment of cement will result in CaCO3 precipitation.

The successful candidate will join a strong interdisciplinary team on a project running since 2016. The research activities will involve characterizing and optimizing growth and CaCO3 precipitation activity of bacterial species when embedded in anoxic cementitious materials under high pressure and temperature. The work will be carried out in collaboration with chemists from the Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University, and material scientists at the Danish Technical University in Copenhagen, Denmark. The project is funded through the Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Center (DHRTC).

We seek a highly motivated candidate with an academic background and documented experience in microbiology-related research. The preferred candidate is an expert on microbial physiology and cultivation and has a flair for applied chemistry.

Who we are
The successful candidate will be employed by the Department of Biology at Aarhus University (http://bio.au.dk/en) and work at the Section for Microbiology at this department. The section hosts the associated centers for Electromicrobiology (CEM) and Water Technology (WATEC) and employs 9 professors with associated junior staff. Research at the section covers studies of microbial physiology, evolution, ecology, and biogeochemistry. It integrates basic and applied research addressing the role, ecophysiology and evolution of microorganisms in natural, technical and clinical systems and in biotechnology (www.bios.au.dk/microbiology). The section has very well-developed laboratories and a permanent supporting staff of highly skilled laboratory technicians.

Qualifications must include:
- Relevant university education and PhD degree,
- Solid background in microbiology and an interest in applied chemistry.
- Ability to work and collaborate in a group, to develop new ideas, and to write and communicate in English.

The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range
Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
