The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at University of Copenhagen is one of the largest health and medical science faculties in Europe, and a powerful player in the increasing competition for research talents and external research grants. The Biotech Research & Innovation Centre
The Biotech Research & Innovation Centre (BRIC) is a world-leading centre of excellence within biomedical research with approximately 250 employees, including more than 60% international researchers. The centre is embedded in the health and natural science campus, in close proximity to the National Hospital of Denmark (Rigshospitalet). BRIC is organised in 26 independent research groups (17 BRIC groups, 6 groups affiliated via the Finsen Laboratory and 3 from other units), eight core facilities, and an administrative unit. BRIC hosts a PhD programme with 115 students and offers a postdoc career programme for the centre’s approximately 90 postdocs. At pre-graduate level, BRIC organises and teaches courses at three master programmes under the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. The centre aims to maintain an open dialogue with the surrounding world through outreach activities.

BRIC’s primary goal is to perform cutting-edge basic research in an open and diverse environment that fosters interdisciplinarity and collaboration. Apart from performing excellent basic biomedical research, the main aims of the centre are to offer outstanding research training of young scientists, translate research findings to hospitals and the industrial sector.

BRIC’s research groups (https://www.bric.ku.dk/Research) work with programmes relevant for understanding basic biological processes, cancer, inflammation, and neurological disorders, and the centre has established itself as internationally leading in the areas of epigenetics, transcriptional control, cell signalling, stem cell biology, cancer development, metastasis and neuroimmunology.

The Position
The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, is looking to recruit a BRIC director with a visionary approach to leadership and an internationally recognised research profile. The director should have experience in research leadership at institutional or research programme level, and have a natural ability and authority for leading scientific and support staff. The director is expected to be based full time at BRIC, where she/he will be expected to establish an active research laboratory addressing fundamental biological questions, complementing BRIC’s research efforts in the molecular mechanisms of disease. Scientifically, the director should have the level to be able to obtain a professorship at University of Copenhagen, which will be a criterion in the selection process.

We are looking for a director who will foster a supportive and collegial environment, in which the employees collectively strive for scientific excellence. The director will be given the opportunity to develop and shape BRIC further in order to maintain its status as a world-leading research centre of excellence. The director is expected to be active in the international research environment and to engage in the further development of BRIC’s international network and collaborations, within and beyond academia. Moreover, the director is responsible for ensuring the continuous development of BRIC’s infrastructure, research support, and administration, thereby securing the best possible frame for BRIC’s research, communication, and utilization of research as well as for BRIC’s research training and educational programmes.

The director has the main responsibility for the scientific profile, strategic development, and focus areas of the centre. In addition, the director has the economic responsibility for BRIC’s activities. In partnership with the dean, the vice-deans, the faculty director, and the other heads of departments and centres, the director constitutes the faculty management, who are responsible for the strategic leadership of the faculty. The BRIC director reports to the dean.

The director is employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The salary for the fixed-term employment is usually a basic salary, a fixed-term supplement, contribution to a pension fund, and a potential qualification supplement.

  • Specific studies and analyses for the Danish Ministry of Defence and the political parties behind the 2018-23 Defence Agreement
  • Teaching, supervision and examination of undergraduate and post-graduate students at the Department of Political Science and/or the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen
  • Knowledge sharing with the rest of society, including media appearances
  • Research and teaching management, including administrative tasks related to the position, e.g. the development and management of projects under the international law grant as a whole within the framework provided by the CMS management.
The weighting of the different assignments may vary periodically, but the successful candidate can expect to spend most of his/her time doing strategic research and working with specific studies for the Danish Ministry of Defence and the political parties behind the 2018-23 Defence Agreement. A certain amount of teaching is also to be expected.

Appointment as Professor MSO is a five-year position after which the Professor MSO will be offered a fixed position at the level of Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science.

To be qualified for the position as professor MSO the applicant must have a PhD in International Law or equivalent academic qualifications as well as:

Conditions of employment

Professor with special responsibilities (Professor MSO)

The annual salary as Professor MSO is DKK 626,000 (EUR 84,000 app.). In addition to the salary paid directly, the University will also pay a monthly contribution to the pension fund corresponding to 17.1 % of the salary. Senior Researcher

Terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The annual salary as Senior Researcher is DKK 477,700 (EUR 63.900 app.) In addition to the salary paid directly to you, the University will also pay a monthly contribution to the pension fund corresponding to 17.1 % of your salary. The candidate is expected to use state-of-the-art genetics, cell and molecular biological, and tissue engineering experimental strategies to develop human pluripotent stem cell-derived islet of Langerhans-like aggregates with functional properties comparable to human islets. More specifically, the candidate will be developing new differentiation protocols for islet hormone-producing cells, not limited to beta cells, optimize the size and cell configuration of islet clusters for optimal therapeutic capacity, and participate in developing quantitative methods for predicting the therapeutic capacity of the cell clusters. The candidate will work closely with a dedicated team of scientists at DanStem, as well as with the partners in the H2020 project.

Qualifications

  • The candidate is required to hold a PhD degree in pluripotent stem cell/developmental biology
  • Postdoctoral experience in the same areas is an advantage
  • We are looking for candidates with hands-on experience or an interest in expanding their knowledge in human pluripotent stem cell maintenance and differentiation, 3D culture of pluripotent stem cells, various cell and molecular biological methods, flow cytometry and confocal microscopy
  • Experience in differentiation towards pancreatic lineages is a plus
  • Finally, we are looking for applicants with a good track record of peer reviewed scientific publications and team work
Employment conditions

The position is for 2 years with a possible extension. The employment is planned to start 1 April or upon agreement.

The terms of employment are set according to the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations or other relevant professional organization. The position will be at the level of postdoctoral fellow and the basic salary according to seniority is 34.364 – 36.180 DKK/month. A supplement could be negotiated, dependent on the candidate´s experiences and qualifications. In addition, a monthly contribution of 17.1% of the salary is paid into a pension fund.
