PhD scholarship within Consumption, Culture and Commerce at the Department of Marketing & Management

The Department of Marketing & Management invites applications for one 3-year position as PhD Student to conduct research associated with a HERA funded research project that sits within the Department’s research area of Consumption, Culture & Commerce. The position is vacant from 1. August 2019 or soon after. The position is located in Odense, but requires some mobility to conduct field research at festivals in Denmark and possibly also other partner countries.

Job description

The PhD candidate will join a research team working on the project ’European Music Festivals, Public Spaces, and Cultural Diversity (FestiVersities)’, funded by the HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) Joint Research Programme on Public Spaces in Europe. The Project Leader is Professor Ian Woodward at Syddansk Universitet, in Odense, Denmark, with other members of the research team based in the Netherlands, Ireland, Poland, and the UK.

The FestiVersities project is a three-year comparative research study of music festivals as public spaces affording encounters with diversities. Working collaboratively with local and EU partners, including the European Festivals Association and partners in each national context, our main challenge is to understand the coordination, representation and negotiation of cultural diversities in the context of music festivals. The project takes a qualitative, comparative approach to investigate across multiple research sites the meaning of the festival for organisers, festival workers, performers, audiences and the community more broadly. Methods of data collection include participant observation, surveys, research interviews, and visual-sonic methodologies.

The key focus of this PhD post will be an exploration of festivals as spaces of collective and community representation, and on processes of prosumption and co-creation of the festival experience. Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of the material, spatial, and discursive construction of the festival as a space of encounter, and be willing to develop their PhD research project within this broad area. They should have a strong background in qualitative and interpretive social scientific methodologies.

As part of the PhD programme, an individual education programme within the field of marketing and management has to be completed. The successful candidate will be expected to complete a six-month stay at a research institution abroad and, over the period of the programme, to acquire experience of teaching or other types of presentation. S/he will also be expected to participate in the various activities within the department and – apart from the stay abroad – to be present at the unit on a daily basis.

Research within the Department is anchored in an understanding of the cooperation between markets, organizations and individuals. It encompasses a variety of areas from evolutionary models of organization to new exotic forms of consumption. It is the ambition of the Department to be in the international frontline in these areas and to seek synergy between research, teaching and knowledge dissemination. The successful candidate will have the following qualities and qualifications:

  • a completed Masters degree (or completed by the time of appointment to this position) or equivalent in a relevant field of the social sciences     
  • strong skills and experience in qualitative and interpretive social research
  • experience in conducting anthropological and cultural-sociological fieldwork, including ethnographic and interview research
  • a capacity to network and create productive collaborative research relationships with key actors in the field of music festival production
  • willingness and capacity to conduct some fieldwork in other European partner national settings
  • the capacity to speak Danish fluently will be an advantage given that the position involves fieldwork at Danish music festivals
  • interest in and capacity to present research findings at international conferences and to help prepare co-authored research papers arising from the project

Your employment as a Salaried PhD Research Fellow is governed by the agreement of 10 November 2015 on Graduate Employees in government appendix 5 – protocol on PhD Research Fellows. The scholarship runs for three years.

An application must include:

  • Detailed CV - if possible including publications and teaching experiences.
  • A certified copy of your master’s degree certificate including all examination results. If you are not yet graduated from a master's programme please indicate when this is scheduled to occur.
  • Application form (please see below)
  • A translation of grades according to the European ECTS system obtained in BA and MSc programmes.
  • A project description (max 5 pages of 2400 characters each, including spaces, notes, appendices, bibliography etc.) - the description should clearly specify the key research theme that the candidate's PhD project proposal is contributing to in the context of the larger project as described above.

Applications will be assessed by a committee. When the evaluation committee has submitted its report, the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her. The assessment report will subsequently be forwarded to the Head of Department who will assemble an appointments committee. The appointments committee will manage and complete the job interviews, should such be conducted.

Applications that are incomplete with regard to the above requirements will not be assessed by the committee.

Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process.
