Postdoc in Computational structural biology

One or two postdoctoral positions are available from Sept 1, 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter, in the Lindorff-Larsen group, Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The postdoctoral fellows will work on a project called BRAINSTRUC within the area of computational aspects of integrative structural biology. BRAINSTRUC is a collaboration between six research groups within structural biology spanning a range of techniques and biological topics, and the successful candidate(s) will be part of a strong and interdisciplinary group of scientists working on developing and applying methods to study the structure and dynamics of proteins.

About BRAINSTRUC and the research environment

The successful candidates will work on computational approaches in integrative structural biology. The project is part of a large interdisciplinary effort called BRAINSTRUC ( funded by the Lundbeck Foundation. In addition to the Lindorff-Larsen group, the project also involves groups devoted to experimental biophysics and structural biology including X-ray crystallography, CryoEM, NMR, SAXS and SANS. The biological focus within BRAINSTRUC is on protein molecules and complexes in the human brain including membrane transporters, the immune system and protein aggregation. We offer a highly dynamic and international research environment located at the Biocenter in central Copenhagen, Denmark ( The Lindorff-Larsen group combines computational and experimental methods to study the structure, function and dynamics of biomacromolecules. Research within the group covers a broad range of areas in protein science including understanding the relationship between protein dynamics and function, protein design, protein folding and stability, drug resistance, and determining the structures of proteins by integrating experiments and simulations. We also use and develop biophysical methods to interpret genomic sequence variation.

The group is part of the Linderstrøm-Lang Centre for Protein Science at the Department of Biology. The research at the centre is highly interdisciplinary ranging from molecular cell biology to protein chemistry, advanced biophysics and computational biology. The centre also has access to state of the art experimental and computational facilities.

Details of the positions and research topics

The postdoctoral fellows will work on one or more of the subprojects within BRAINSTRUC, focusing on computational methods, both existing and newly developed, together with experimental data to determine the structure and dynamics of complex biomolecules and their assemblies. Experimental data may include NMR, X-ray diffraction, SAXS, SANS, EPR, Cryo-EM and other sources of structural information. Research topics for the fellowships include:

  • Developing our Bayesian/Maximum Entropy approaches to integrate experiments and simulations
  • Using coarse-grained and all-atom simulations to study large molecular complexes
  • Using molecular simulations to interpret cryoEM data and experiments
  • Integrative methods to study intrinsically disordered proteins

We are seeking motivated and strong applicants with a PhD degree in biophysics, physics, chemistry or biochemistry or similar fields with documented (via peer publications and preprints) prior research experience within one or more of these areas:

  • All-atom of coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations of proteins
  • Interpreting structural data using molecular dynamics simulations
  • Developing and applying methods for enhanced sampling simulations of biomolecules
It will also be advantageous to have experience with one or more of the following topics:

  • Familiarity with interpreting cryoEM data
  • Using or developing methods for restraining of reweighting molecular simulations by experimental data

Terms of employment

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 430.569 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 73.627). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
