Assistant Professor in Knowledge and Technology Transfer

The Mads Clausen Institute at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor in Knowledge and Technology Transfer with an emphasis on sustainability, the commercialization of emerging technologies, and education. The intended starting date of the position is September 1st, 2019.

The position is located within the Section SDU Technology Entrepreneurship and Innovation (TEI) at the Faculty of Engineering on the international campus Sønderborg. The section unites engineering, innovation management, and entrepreneurship scholars in joint research projects and teaching. TEI focuses on the technology innovation process, from ideation and prototyping, to production and operations management, to technology commercialization.

SDU TEI is embedded in a region with a strong network of companies, including some of Denmark’s largest global industrial players (i.e. Danfoss, Lego, Linak, Vestas) and many manufacturing SMEs. Projects currently run by the group cover a range of cutting-edge technology innovation topics with high impact, among others these include: Smart Factory – I4.0, digitalization and lean automation, collaborative robots, innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems, new technology transfer models, and commercialization and entrepreneurship of emerging technologies. The group publishes in leading international journals across these topics, such as CIRP Annals, Robotics and Autonomous Systems, Research Policy, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Creativity and Innovation Management, Journal of Small Business Management or Business Horizons.

The SDU TEI section is a highly international and interdisciplinary group of 12 faculty members, with international students. Job description
A successful candidate will drive internationally competitive research, collaborate in and across disciplines, work closely with industry and attract competitive external research funding. The candidate is expected to contribute significantly to SDU TEI’s research and teaching environment and to the overall strategy of SDU’s Mads Clausen Institute (MCI). The candidate is expected to provide outstanding education, including the supervision of final projects on bachelor and master level, and to contribute to the development of junior faculty research in line with high international standards.

The candidate will get the opportunity to shape this development together with the team and develop and implement research-project ideas with a regional focus and impact. Topics of interest are (but not limited to): knowledge and technology transfer in the context of emerging technologies and sustainability (clean and green technologies, IoT, industrial electronics, etc.), new forms of university-industry collaboration, academic entrepreneurship, commercialization of technology-based new venture ideas, sustainable business models and technology entrepreneurship education.

We expect
The candidate must possess research qualifications and teaching skills corresponding to those obtained after a successful completion of a PhD degree.

The candidate must have a PhD degree in engineering, technology management, or a closely related field and show the ability to publish in engineering and/or technology management and/or entrepreneurship journals. The candidate should provide evidence of teaching experience at undergraduate and graduate level (e.g. teaching evaluations, certification of completed pedagogical and supervision courses, etc.). In addition, candidates with experience in attracting external (research) funding will be preferred.

We are seeking a highly motivated and outgoing candidate, who can work and communicate in an international and interdisciplinary team. The candidate must be a team player and at the same time able to carry out independent and rigorous work. Experience and competences in the following topics will be of advantage:

  • Mentoring and coaching students in industry collaboration projects, internships and final projects
  • Ability to work in national and international projects across a variety of industries: manufacturing, regional development, and sustainability
  • Developing (emerging) international networks for research and collaboration activities
  • Performing research management activities such as reviews for journals and conferences
  • Managing externally funded projects with multiple partners (e.g. EU projects)
