Assistant Professor in User Experience Design 973147

The Department of Engineering (ENG) of Aarhus University (AU) is looking for a creative and visionary Assistant Professor to bridge design and engineering in both research and teaching across all engineering disciplines. This international top-100 University has made an ambitious strategic plan to place the University in direct competition with the global engineering elite. Therefore, the University is seeking a design oriented researcher driven with visions for innovations and technologies for the future, to join our existing Socio-Technical Design research group.

The position is for 4 years and is available from August 1st 2018 or as soon as possible here after.

From a point of departure in established collaboration within engineering disciplines and design, the ambition of the group is to supply design competences in both research and teaching across all scientific and engineering disciplines in the university to strengthen and increase design in the intersection of social and technical systems.

The Socio-Technical Design group
The group gathers competences from architecture, industrial design, interaction design, mechanical engineering and anthropology inspired design. We believe that design skills are built on solid artistic and academic foundations and best executed in a strong technical environment with empathy for social impact. This is echoed in our credo: that we equally care for at the object of design and the impact of design.
The group deploys the approach of Constructive Design Research to develop new knowledge, promoting sketching, co-creation and innovation framing as key elements of research and teaching. In this context design is an interdisciplinary practice merging strong technical competences, aesthetic and social concerns, designed artefacts, systems and spaces whether manifested in materials or concepts.

Requirements
In particular, we welcome applicants showing strong practical and academic competences in:

  • classical disciplines of formgiving, drawing and sketching,
  • use understanding and methods for empathic design
  • working constructively and disruptively with technology, business and social innovation
  • the research practice of Constructive Design Research/ Research-through-Design
  • bridging technical science skills and competences with design – both existing and emerging fields.

We invite interested applicants to position themselves from a point of departure in the above in full or in parts. Along those lines applicants are requested to submit a research plan and teaching portfolio accompanied by a vision statement for the position including expected contributions to the group and its ambition of bridging social interests and technologies in design and engineering.

The candidate is required to teach relevant courses in design across, engineering and other technical educational programs.

Applicants should as a minimum hold a PhD degree and some years of post-graduate research and publication experience is required. Experience from successful external research collaborations with industry and academia, project management skills, and experience in attraction of external funding is preferred.
