Assistant Professor of Computational Chemistry of Cellular Membranes at the Department of Chemistry, Aarhus University

Applications are invited for a position as Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry (chem.au.dk) and affiliated with the Biomodelling group. The opening is in the field of cellular membrane modelling, including areas as complex membranes, receptor modelling and neuroscience. The intended start is 1 September 2021 and is a full-time 3-year fixed term position.

The Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University
The Department is one of the leading European chemistry departments with a broad research programs. It has a permanent staff of ~30 full, associate and assistant professors, a support-staff of ~30 people, ~100 PhD-students and ~50 postdocs and around 400 students. In addition to excellence in research, teaching and supervision, The Department of Chemistry values equal opportunities, a collegial atmosphere, and a student-friendly mindset of future colleagues. We offer two full educations (BSc and MSc) in chemistry and medicinal chemistry, and contribute to programs in nanoscience, molecular biology, biology and chemical engineering.

Job responsibilities
Your primary responsibilities will be research and research-based teaching and supervision. Applicants for a Assistant Professor position must be able to demonstrate potential for excellent research and teaching. Extensive postdoctoral training (minimum 4 years) or similar is expected.

Interest and competences in teaching medicinal and computational chemistry at all levels of university education is essential. Teaching can be in Danish or English, depending on the course. We offer didactics course to applicants who have not yet fulfilled such requirements, learning Danish is however expected.

Main tasks of the position

  • Teaching and supervision of bachelor and master students and co-supervision of postdocs and PhD-students
  • Participate in pedagogical training
  • Independent research of high international quality, including publications
  • Contribute to group grant writing to attract external funding
Expected competences
The ideal candidate has a track record and expertise in a broad range of molecular modelling techniques in medicinal chemistry with applications towards neuroscience and lipid membranes and neurological therapeutics. The candidate is expected to perform research at an internationally competitive level. Experience in supervision from BSc to postdocs is expected as is a track record in participating in securing research funding.

The following skills are required:
  • Experience in modelling complex lipid membranes
  • Expert in MD simulations
  • Knowledge of homology modelling, free-energy calculations and computational drug design
  • Broad experience in modelling membrane proteins
  • Documented experience working with international and industrial partners
You must have good interpersonal skills, be friendly and helpful and able to contribute to a good working environment. You must enjoy working in an international dynamic group of people.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
