Assistant professor/postdoctoral researcher in political science/sociology

The Department of Political Science at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University, invites applications for two positions as assistant professor or postdoctoral researcher offering applicants an exciting opportunity to join the REACTOR research project on citizens' reactions to knowledge authorities.

The starting date is May 2021 or subject to mutual agreement.

The research project
A dominant narrative holds that we live in a “post-truth” era where previously legitimate sources of knowledge are rejected by citizens who not only turn against elites but also ‘spread’ resistance between fields like scientific expertise, political institutions and the official media. Claims and conjectures are abound in the public debate, but the REACTOR project provides the first multinational, cross-sectoral, mixed-method empirical examination of the widespread claims of ‘post-truth’. By combining the sociology of authority and knowledge with public opinion research, we investigate if ordinary citizens do in fact resist established authorities in professional expertise, politics and media information and whether resistance is linked across domains. We also aim to develop and in-depth understanding of what motivates resistance to or mistrust of knowledge authorities seen from the citizen’s perspective.

REACTOR is relevant for applicants with strong research qualifications in one or more of the adjacent scholarly fields such as the sociology of science, professions and expertise, authority, health policy, political legitimacy, political psychology and/or public opinion.

REACTOR is financed by DFF (Independent Research Fund Denmark) for the period 2020-2024. The research group is led by Associate Professor Lars Thorup Larsen and includes research partners in Austria, the Netherlands and Denmark.

Job description
REACTOR invites applications for two positions. Depending on the field of applicants, each position may be offered as either a 3-year position as assistant professor or as a 2-year position as postdoctoral researcher.

  • One position as assistant professor or postdoc with main responsibilities for the qualitative data collection and analysis. Applicants for this position should have strong qualifications in qualitative methods and the sociology of professions, expertise and authority. Experience with mixed-methods research is a clear advantage. The successful applicant will collaborate closely with the PI and international parters to investigate how ordinary citizens reason about knowledge authorities and resistance to authorities in professional expertise, politics and the media.
  • One position as assistant professor or postdoc with main responsibilities for the quantitative data collection and analysis. Applicants for this position should have strong qualifications in quantitative methods and public opinion research. Experience with mixed-methods research is a clear advantage. The successful applicant will collaborate closely with the PI and international parters to collect comparative survey data on citizens' attitudes to knowledge authorities across politics, expertise and media in four countries.

The successful applicants will be employed as part of the research group and are expected to devote their research time to the project and engage in collaborative research within the focus of the project. A position as assistant professor implies significant teaching obligations whereas a position as postdoctoral researcher implies modest teaching obligations. Applicants are thus encouraged to describe their potential contributions to teaching obligations in the BA or MA programs of the department. Through the research group, assistant professors/postdocs will have access to significant funding for conferences, data collection, etc.

Your qualifications
Applicants are expected to hold (or be close to completing) a PhD in political science, sociology or a related social science field. In addition to interest in conducting collaborative research within the focus of the project, applicants must demonstrate the ability to conduct state-of-the-art research within the field, possess strong methodological skills, extensive experience with empirical research, and an excellent command of spoken and written English.

Interested applicants should submit an application letter (2-3 pages) motivating why the applicant is interested in being part of REACTOR and how the applicant can contribute to the success of the project, outlining potential avenues for research relevant to the focus of the project.
