Position Overview
The Associate Director/Director, Sustainability, Nordics will be responsible for leading the Copenhagen Office and for building BSR’s work with current members and companies headquartered in the Nordics. Our Nordic members represent all of the following industries: consumer sectors, transport, healthcare, industrial and utilities, manufacturing, and energy and extractives and the Associate Director/Director will be engaged in activities and projects spanning across BSR’s core areas of expertise including Sustainability Strategy, Human Rights, Climate and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion - depending on the candidate’s particular experience.
Pending on their profile, the Associate Director/Director will be part of BSR’s Global Areas of Expertise or Industry teams. The Associate Director/Director will work closely with the team to grow BSR’s presence in the region, advance BSR’s thought leadership and methodologies, and develop business opportunities and consulting projects that provide high value to companies advancing their sustainability leadership and foster BSR’s mission.
This position is full-time, based in Copenhagen.
Office Leadership: The Associate Director/Director will oversee the Copenhagen Office and diverse team of 14 colleagues, creating and maintaining and environment that embraces BSR’s values and reflects our commitment to a sustainable work life. The Associate Director/Director together with the office coordinator, will also oversee the office administration in liaison with global People & Culture and CFO functions, and will represent the office within the broader BSR organization External Representation: The Associate Director/Director will represent BSR and lead our engagement with key external partners and organizations in the Nordics, proactively working to create opportunities to raise BSR’s profile more broadly. The Associate Director/Director will be responsible for building and maintaining key strategic relationships and partnerships, joining events and collaborations on behalf of BSR, and demonstrating thought leadership through writing and publishing opinion pieces, blogs, and reports Advisory Services and Project Directorship: The Associate Director/Director will play a leading role in delivering advisory services to member and non-member companies across a range of sectors in EMEA, with a particular focus on the Nordic market but the opportunity to lead global engagements as well. The Associate Director/Director will provide oversight—and often hands-on support—for the delivery of best-in-class consulting services to companies. The Associate Director/Director will typically oversee 5-10 ongoing projects at any one time, working actively with project teams, and providing thought partnership to project managers. Business Development and Member Engagement: The Associate Director/Director will be responsible for recruiting new member companies, deepening relationships with business leaders in Nordics-based companies, and developing new business opportunities across the region, in partnership with BSR’s global industry and area of expertise leaders. In addition, the Associate Director/Director will serve as an account relationship manager and trusted advisor for global companies headquartered in the Nordics, but also likely to engage and partner with BSR member companies in other locations according to business needs. At BSR we have implemented a transparent total compensation framework with an emphasis on internal equity. In order to maintain our equity our hiring rate will be 648,361 kr. – 742,000 kr. for this position depending on the level plus a target bonus.
Qualifications
The title of the position will depend on the selected candidate's individual experience level.
Extensive experience in implementing sustainability, human rights, social impact, equity, inclusion and justice, and/or climate consulting projects and leading teams in a matrixed organization. Human Rights expertise preferred. Proven leadership and passion for leading teams, including a demonstrated ability to use emotional intelligence in people management, mentor other team members to improve skills and effectiveness, create belonging. Relevant experience working with the Nordic markets, knowledge and understanding of Nordic and European business context, sustainability priorities, regulations, supplemented by an active presence in local networks. Knowledge and experience related to business processes such as strategic planning, organizational development, training programs, performance management, change management, etc. Significant private sector or consulting experience (at least 12-15 years) required to perform the key functions of a consulting leader, including: developing and maintaining senior-level client relationships; pursuing and creating business opportunities; and overseeing multiple projects under tight deadlines, and exercising influence with senior leaders and external partners. Experience should be from the following sectors: consumer sectors, transport, healthcare, industrial and utilities, manufacturing, and energy and extractives. Capacity to work and thrive in a growing, fast-paced entrepreneurial organization with a collaborative environment. Bilingual English and one Scandinavian language (Danish, Norwegian, Swedish) required. Other European languages a plus. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and well-developed interpersonal skills for high-level interaction with staff and Board of Trustees. Relevant education or experience in business, law, public policy, environmental management, or other relevant discipline required. Willingness to undertake up to 30% business travel.
