Associate or full professor in User Experience Design

The Digital Design Department at the IT University of Copenhagen invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of associate or full professor. The proposed starting date is June 2020 or soon thereafter.

The IT University’s vision is to create and share knowledge that is profound and leads to ground-breaking information technology and services for the benefit of humanity. The Digital Design Department delivers society- and industry-relevant research and research-based education in the area of digital technology, media and design. Researchers in the department combine design theory with technological insights and a critical perspective on human and social aspects of digital design and services.

The candidate
We look to a candidate with a PhD and a strong profile in user experience design, human computer interaction, interaction design, or closely related fields.

The candidate must be able to conduct education and develop the research agenda at the intersection of at least two of the following areas:

  • User experience design, including a theoretical interest in affective UX, speculative and critical UX design, social and organizational aspects of UX design, aesthetic UX design or other theoretical UX design aspects. Design and application areas could cover health, finance, public service, entertainment, games, and museums.
  • Application design and development with a focus on user experience, such as experience with relevant methods and tools for design and development - including mobile and other emerging technologies and an understanding of state-of-the-art application platforms.
  • Codesign methods, including an understanding of how to engage users in UX design processes, approaches and methods oriented toward allowing a variety of user groups to participate in UX design processes.
The ideal applicant has a combined theoretical and applied research approach. Experience with interdisciplinary work, including digital technology, media, art and design, is an advantage.

Job description
The selected candidate is expected to contribute to research and education, to work strategically in research, research funding, and organisation of research, and mentor junior faculty and postdocs in the applied-for area. Moreover, she/he is expected to attract external research funding and to build external collaboration in joint research projects, also with partners outside of academia.

Qualification requirements
The successful applicant is expected to have a track record of delivering excellent results with regard to:

  • Research
  • Education and curriculum development
  • Outreach outside academia, e.g. to industry, other organizations, or the public
For applicants on full professor level the successful applicant is further expected to demonstrate experience in:

  • PhD supervision
  • Research management
  • Attracting external funding
The applicant must document results in all these directions. It must be documented that the applicant is both internationally recognized and has had an impact outside her/his peer community, for instance in collaborations with industry or other organizations outside academia.

The responsibilities will include:

  • Develop education and teaching at the university
  • Lead the specialization in UX Design at our MSc program, Digital Design and Interactive Technologies
  • Contribute to making ITU a leading university in UX Design
Responsibilities on full professor level will further include:

  • Lead cooperation with external partners
  • Create a pipeline of external research funding
  • Develop relations to external partners, to business, government and society at large
