Associate Professor in Green Biorefining

The Biological and Chemical Engineering Section (BCE) at Department of Engineering ( Aarhus University, invites applications for a position as Associate Professor in green biorefining.

The University has made an ambitious strategic investment in a 5-year recruitment plan to increase its activities significantly within research and education in the engineering sciences, with the vision of bringing AU into the global engineering elite. Therefore, the University seeks exceptional innovative and visionary engineering researchers to be part of this build-up to strengthen and develop BCE at Aarhus University.

The position is available from February 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Engineering and the research unit of Biotechnology
The Biological and Chemical Engineering Section has strong biotechnology research areas within medical and industrial biotechnology, process engineering, industrial microbiology, immunology, protein and lipid biotechnology, and modelling of biological processes. Close collaboration with the Departments of Molecular Biology and Genetics, iNano, Biosciences, Food, Agroecology and Chemistry is a natural part of our culture. The successful applicant will be working with Biotechnology and will produce and disseminate knowledge and research results about the biological basis of relevant processes. Translation of results into solving relevant societal problems within health and industry is a highly prioritized part of our work.

Working area
The main activity will be research within the area of green biorefining and sustainable production of feed and food proteins, chemicals, and materials from green biomasses such as grasses and legumes. The area includes physical-, biological- and chemical- biomass conversion technologies with emphasis on process integration, creating synergies between a broad range of biomass conversion technologies and industries within different product applications. The research is highly cross disciplinary and collaborations within departmental Technology programs and the AU interdisciplinary thematic centres (CBIO, iFOOD, WATEC, iClimate) are encouraged.

Research activities will be carried out in the area of process development and engineering bringing technologies from lab scale to demonstration scale and include biomass/process-stream analysis, modelling and process optimization.
Biomass conversion and separation technologies such as these will be relevant:

  • Biomass handling and storage
  • Wet fractionation and separation of leaf protein concentrate
  • Pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation of lignocellulosics
  • Membrane filtration for separation of soluble proteins, carbohydrates and nutrients
  • Thermal conversion
  • Drying technologies

The individual applicant is excellent within his/her research field and has a strong academic track record relative to career stage. Furthermore, the candidate will have to attract external funding, be responsible for teaching and supervision within the research area, and to participate in research-based knowledge exchange with society and industry.

Candidates must have a strong academic background, documented successful grant writing and experience with project management, industrial/public sector collaboration, as well as teaching and supervision experience. Criteria for evaluating candidates can be found here.
Candidate will lead the Demonstration platform for R&D in Green Biorefining at AU Engineering and must have documented skills for leading an interdisciplinary team of people and strong collaboration skills for industry/public organisations.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
