Associate professor in Public Administration & Politics

The Department of Social Sciences and Business at Roskilde University invites applications for an associate professorship in Public Administration and Politics. The position is available from May 1, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is linked to the ‘Roskilde School of Governance (’ Research Group. The associate professorship includes research, teaching, and outreach obligations. The applicant should match the profile below:

  • Consolidated research profile within public administration and politics
  • Strong methodological skills, preferably including quantitative methods
  • Keen interest and experience in teaching and supervision, preferably interdisciplinary and project-based
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with the broader public

Responsibilities and tasks
The associate professor’s duties will primarily include research (including publication/academic dissemination duties) and research-based teaching and supervision (with associated examination duties) predominantly in the following teaching programmes: ‘Forvaltning’, ‘International Public Administration and Politics’, and the Social Science Bachelor Programme. The position also includes a duty to share knowledge with the rest of society – including participation in the public debate. Furthermore, the associate professor is expected to manage research projects, provide guidance and supervision of PhD students and assistant professors and post docs, participate in research and teaching group activities, engage in external fundraising as well as take part in academic assessments.

The successful candidate is expected to;
  • conduct research meeting high international standards,
  • contribute to the development of the research profile of the department,
  • engage in external fundraising to increase funds for the department,
  • play an active role in developing new teaching methods,
  • participate in the department’s communication with the broader public,
  • take responsibility for the long-term well-being at the department,
  • contribute to the administrative responsibilities of the department,
  • promote RUC’s academic reputation.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent in an appropriate field. Qualifications within the following scientific areas are required;
  • documented research production at an international level, including publications in the field’s internationally recognized journals/publishing houses,
  • documented teaching qualifications or other material for the evaluation of your pedagogical level,
  • documented strong methodological skills and competences in research and teaching.

It is a requirement that the applicant provides evidence of a steady rate of publications, a progression in publications over time, as well as current research activity in the form of recent publications at high international level. Experience with editorial experience, citations, international networks and other research merits will be taken into account.

You are also required to be enterprising, to possess good interpersonal skills and to be a visible, active participant in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

Ability to teach in Danish is a great asset and successful candidates who do not speak Danish (or possibly Swedish or Norwegian) will be requested to acquire the necessary skills in Danish within the first two years of service, so as to ensure that they can participate satisfactorily in teaching activities as well as in academic and administrative activities at the University. At the time of appointment, successful candidates must master English for academic purposes. In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to;
  • research topic (including the fit between the research group and the applicant’s research profile),
  • scientific production and research potential at a high international level,
  • experience in teaching, and education development,
  • Strong teaching qualifications, experience with project-based learning, and interdisciplinary teaching experience,
  • the ability to promote and utilize research results,
  • the ability to contribute to development of the Department’s internal and external cooperation.
