Associate professor in recognition and uptake of human viruses

Are you interested in human viruses and can you contribute to the development of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics with a strong academic profile as an associate professor? Then we invite you to apply for this position.

The position is for 1-2 years depending on the actual funding available and is starting 1. June 2021 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Job description
Your tasks include:

  • teach courses and supervise students within the field of virology
  • contribute to research projects centered around expression of endogenous retroviral elements and their interactions with the immune system in human cells and building up your own research group within this or related fields
  • contribute to research projects centered around recognition and uptake of human viruses (e.g. corona, influenza, zika) in human cells
  • attract external funding
  • cooperate with the industry to address emerging health threats
  • participate in the daily administration and development of the department
  • potentially help to set up a startup company within the field of virus-like particles (VLP)

Your profile
Academic qualifications:
In order to be able to fulfill the tasks above, you are expected to:
  • hold a PhD in molecular biology, medical science or equivalent
  • have solid background in research in endogenous viruses

We prefer if you:
  • Have experience supervising students and postdocs
  • Have teaching experience (e.g. in virology)
  • Have a strong publication record
  • Write and speak English fluently

Personal qualifications required to fulfill the tasks above:
  • Applicants should be self-driven and capable of planning and conducting their own research while collaborating with Danish and international partners.
  • The maintenance of a complete digital laboratory journal will be mandatory.

The department
The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics is part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University and comprises research within the areas of Gene Expression, Molecular Medicine, Structural Biology, Systems Biology and Plant Molecular Biology. There are currently 75 full time scientific staff and 120 PhD students. The department is responsible for two educations: Molecular Biology and Molecular Medicine with a yearly uptake of 160 students in total. Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
