Associate professorship in Comparative Culture Studies

The Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark, invites applications for an associate professorship in Comparative Culture Studies to be filled by 1 August 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Center for Comparative Culture Studies at the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, Copenhagen University, is a center for comparative studies of social and cultural forms across the globe. Research at the Center is based mainly on long-term ethnographic fieldwork within the regions covered by the Department. In terms of teaching, the Center offers theoretical, thematic and methodological elective courses at BA and MA level.

The successful candidate will take part in developing the full range of courses offered at the Center and will also be able to teach most of them. While the main research, teaching and administrative responsibilities will be in relation to the Center, the successful candidate will also be actively engaged in other departmental teaching and research activities, such as those associated with the master’s program in Cross-Cultural Studies.

The associate professor will take part in all activities of the Department, including examinations and administration, and can also manage research projects, provide pedagogical supervision, support assistant professors and participate in academic assessment panels.

Qualification requirements
In connection with the appointment of the position of associate professor, we emphasize that the applicant has research and teaching qualifications corresponding to what can be achieved by satisfactory employment as an assistant professor or tenure track assistant professor.

The applicant is expected to be able to take part in all the activities of the department, including examinations and administration, and to manage research projects, provide pedagogical supervision, support assistant professors and participate in academic assessment panels.

The duties of the position are evenly distributed on tasks related to teaching and tasks related to research (including relevant administration and knowledge-sharing). Hence the assessment of applicants’ qualifications will assign equal weight to documented competences in the field of teaching, pedagogy and didactics as in the field of research, research collaboration and research organization. Applicants with documentation of excellent teaching skills including experience with development of teaching and with experiences and reflections on how most effectively to integrate research and teaching activities will be given priority.

In addition, emphasis will be placed on the following professional and personal qualifications:

  • Disciplinary background in a field concerned with cross-cultural comparison and social and cultural theory (ethnography or anthropology for example)
  • Strong expertise in one or more of the following regions covered by the department: Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Middle America, Asia or the Arctic.
  • Long-term ethnographic field experience and the ability to teach fieldwork methods.
  • The capacity and willingness to supervise, teach and design courses at BA and MA levels (candidates should indicate in their application in which potential areas they would like to develop their teaching profiles)
  • The necessary skills and willingness to communicate with students, colleagues, administrative and support staff and the wider community
  • The capacity and willingness to contribute to the research and teaching environment, including administrative duties, at the Centre for Comparative Culture Studies
  • The capacity to take part in other teaching programs and research areas at the Department of Cross-cultural and Regional Studies (candidates should indicate in their application in which departmental teaching programs they could teach)

  • Publications. Applicants may choose a maximum of five publications for assessment, of which at least three must have been published within the five years immediately preceding the deadline for applications. Publication dates must be clearly marked on the publication list. The publications selected must be uploaded as attachments and named from 1 to 5.
Should any material submitted consist of work with named co-authors, or work that is otherwise the result of collective academic endeavours, the extent of the applicant’s contribution to the work must be clearly stipulated. The Faculty may ask for a signed statement from the co-authors stipulating the extent and nature of each individual’s contribution.

Only material in English, German, French, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish will be assessed.

All material will be shredded at the end of the appointment procedure.

Appointment procedure
After the application deadline, the Head of Department selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointment Committee. All applicants are notified whether their application has been accepted for assessment. The Dean subsequently appoints an expert assessment committee tasked with carrying out an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee. Applicants are ultimately offered the opportunity of commenting on the part of the assessment relating to themselves before the appointment is finalized.

Salary and conditions of employment
Terms of appointment and salary will be in accordance with an agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The salary range starts at DKK 38,000 (EUR 5,067) + a 17,1 % contribution to the pension scheme. It is possible to negotiate salary supplements on an annual basis.
