Associate Professorship in Media Studies, Roskilde University

The Department of Communication and Arts (DCA), Roskilde University, invites applications for an associate professorship in Media Studies, to be filled from August 15th 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

DCA is an innovative and interdisciplinary university environment, characterized by diversity with respect to theories, methods and areas of study in research and teaching. The department produces knowledge that contributes to critical research and reflexive practice in relation to development and change in society, including public institutions, private organizations, NGOs, and cultural and media institutions. Responsibilities and tasks
The associate professor´s work will primarily include research (including publication/academic dissemination) and research-based teaching (including examination and course coordination). The associate professor will be expected to teach both MA and BA levels and across programs. Teaching at Roskilde University involves supervising problem-oriented project work (PPL – read more here) and requires an interdisciplinary approach. The position also entails public dissemination of knowledge, including participation in public debate. Furthermore, the associate professor is expected to participate in managing research, providing guidance and supervision of PhD students and assistant professors as well as taking part in academic assessments.

The candidate is expected to have keen research interests in media studies within one or more of the following areas:

  • Cultural media studies and cultural online studies
  • Media theory, including strong methodological and analytical skills
  • Media aesthetics
  • Digital platforms, business models and work-life

The following qualifications are required:
  • Documented scientific qualifications such as assistant professor or equivalent in relation to the subject areas mentioned above
  • A PhD degree or equivalent within the broader fields of communication, media studies or related fields
  • Documented international publication record with relevance to the subject areas of the position
  • Documented research profile relevant for the subject areas mention above including plans for its further development
  • Documented teaching on university level within one or more of the areas of interest
  • Documented training in teaching and university pedagogy
  • Documented course development experience
  • Fluent English (written and spoken)

The ideal candidate shall be enterprising, possess good communication skills, and a wish to be visible and involved in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in collaboration across the department, its research and teaching.

In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to;
  • Research topic and its relation to the research profile of the department
  • Interdisciplinarity of research and teaching
  • Scientific production at an international level
  • The ability to promote and utilize research results
  • Ability and experience with attracting external funding for research
  • Ability and experience with dissemination of research and/or collaboration with external parties
  • Experience in teaching and education development and management
  • Academic experience, preferably including international academic experience, e.g. from reviewing or editing academic papers and/or from organizing research conferences or seminars
  • Ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation

Terms of employment

Within a reasonable period of time (max. 2 years), non-Danish-speaking appointees are expected to acquire proficiency in Danish sufficient to be able to interact with colleagues and teach and supervise students.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

After the deadline for applications the Dean will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.

Once the recruitment process is completed, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.
