Associate Professorship in Microbial Physiology
The Department of Biology at Aarhus University, Denmark, invites applications for a permanent, full-time associate professor position in microbial physiology to expand and strengthen the departments research and teaching in microbiology as well as applied and environmental microbial ecology. The position opens on January 1st 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position
We invite an excellent candidate in microbial physiology and biochemistry to join the department´s Section for Microbiology to complement and strengthen the sections strong research profile in the microbial ecology of natural and technical systems, which integrates microbial ecophysiology, biodiversity, evolution and biogeochemistry. The appointee is expected to collaborate broadly with the current scientific staff at the department along with maintaining and extending her/his national and international network.
The preferred candidate should have an active research focus on studies of metabolic pathways and catalytic functions of environmentally relevant microorganisms and utilize state-of-the art cultivation and omics techniques for this purpose.
The appointee will contribute to teaching and supervision at all levels of education (BSc, MSc, PhD), and participate in curriculum development as well as the application of innovative teaching methods, including collaborative student involvement. Participation in and development of public outreach and/or in community engagement programs, as well as involvement in departmental and university services is an expected and integral part of all positions at the department. Qualifications and experience in teaching will be taken into careful consideration during the evaluation.
The candidate
We are looking for an internationally competitive researcher with an excellent academic track-record in microbial physiology/biochemistry and a proven ability to address forefront research questions within this area. We expect that our new colleague shares our enthusiasm for teaching and supervision of bachelor- and graduate students.
Applicants should present their work plan and strategy for a research program as well as a plan for future funding.
We expect the successful candidate to:
- Conduct research at the highest international level
- Establish and develop her/his own research group
- Establish synergies between her/his own research and ongoing research activities at the section and department level
- Contribute to relevant teaching and supervision of bachelor, masters and PhD students
- Be able to raise substantial extramural research funding
- Contribute to the departments strategy and working environment
- Learn spoken and written Danish to be able to communicate and teach in Danish within a few years.
QualificationsThe following professional and personal qualifications are required:
- PhD degree in microbiology or a related field
- An outstanding, independent research profile in Microbial Physiology
- Proven publication record in international peer-reviewed journals
- Experience in teaching and supervision
- Experience in international research collaboration and networking
- Experience of and interest in attracting extramural research funding
- Ability to write and speak clear and fluent English
Research qualifications will be assessed in relation to the period of active research, the degree of originality and the academic output, e.g., the number and quality of publications in internationally recognised, peer-reviewed journals or compatible high-ranking series published by internationally recognised publishing houses.
Working EnvironmentThe place of employment is Aarhus University, Department of Biology, Building 1540, Ny Munkegade 114, DK-8000 Aarhus C, Denmark. The associate professor will be part of the research group at the
Section for Microbiology. The section offers state-of-the-art laboratories for microbial cultivation, molecular biology and geochemistry supported by a skilled staff of 8 laboratory technicians. Here the candidate will join a collaborative and complementary-skilled team of 5 professors, 3 associate professors and 2 tenure track assistant professors. Research at the section is supported by substantial external funding and is tightly integrated with the Centers for
Electromicrobiology and
Water Technology. Besides, the newly funded
Novo Nordisk Foundation CO2 Research Center at Aarhus University may also offer collaborative research opportunities for the candidate.
The Department of Biology hosts research programs and teaching curricula that cover all major biological sub-disciplines. The Department currently employs approximately 140 academic and technical staff and 40 PhD students. The Department hosts BSc and MSc study programs in Biology with about 400 students enrolled as well as a PhD program. The Department offers a vibrant and informal research environment with a long-standing tradition for collaboration with international university partners in the absolute elite.
