Associate professor/Tenure track assistant professor in Nanomedicine

Applications are invited for a position as associate professor or tenure track assistant professor at Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Centre (iNANO) and Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBG) to begin in May 2021.

The position
The position is in the field of nanomedicine with the aim to investigate and therapeutically manipulate cellular processes and communication. The applicant should conduct research at the highest international level to strengthen or complement the existing nanomedicine expertise at iNANO. This should be reflected in an interdisciplinary research plan describing clear aims and approaches to study the interface between mammalian cells and their surroundings using nanotools. The position will be integrated with research and teaching activities at iNANO and MBG. A start-up package can be negotiated.

The ideal candidate could have a background in one or more of (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • Single-molecule studies
  • Super-resolution microscopy
  • Avidity in molecular interactions
  • Receptor activation and cell organisation
  • Cellular delivery systems
  • Synthetic biology and supramolecular chemistry
  • Host-pathogen interactions
  • Single-cell technology development
  • Design of self-assembled structures

The candidate
A successful candidate must have a solid background in biochemistry, molecular biology, nanoscience, chemical biology or similar topics and be able to demonstrate promise of outstanding capabilities in independent research, dissemination, funding, and teaching. Outstanding results and a high level of experience from a postdoc position including substantial, international experience are essential for a tenure-track appointment at Aarhus University. Successful establishment of an original research programme and substantial experience with academic training and teaching are essential qualifications for an tenure-track professorship.

Successful candidates will be expected to:
  • Establish and lead their own research team;
  • Lead innovative research of the highest international standard;
  • Deliver teaching and/or advisory work at Aarhus University
  • Supervise masters and PhD students;
  • Complete postgraduate teacher training for Assistant Professors at Aarhus University
  • Be granted competitive research funding from external funding bodies
  • Write and speak English fluently

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics
The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics is part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University and comprises research within the areas Molecular Medicine, Structural Biology, Systems Biology and Plant Molecular Biology. There are currently 220 full time scientific staff and 140 PhD students. The department is responsible for two educations: Molecular Biology and Molecular Medicine with yearly uptake of 160 students in total. Natural Sciences Tenure Track
Aarhus University offers talented scientists from around the world attractive career perspectives via the Natural Sciences Tenure Track Programme. Highly qualified candidates are appointed as Assistant Professors for a period of six years with the prospect of performance- based advancement to a tenured Associate Professorship.

The aim of the Natural Sciences Tenure Track Programme is to:

  • to create transparency in the academic career path
As part of the tenure track position, the candidate is offered:

  • capability development, including postgraduate teacher training

  • support to develop scientific networks and to secure interdisciplinary research at the highest level
As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor at Aarhus University.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference

Formalities and salary range
Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
