Associate/assistant professorships in the area of interaction design

The Digital Design Department at the IT University of Copenhagen invites applications for 1-2 associate/assistant professorships in the area of interaction design. The proposed starting date is 1 August 2018 or sooner. 
 
We invite applicants who want to contribute to the IT University’s vision of creating and sharing knowledge that is profound and leads to ground-breaking information technology and services for the benefit of humanity; and to contribute to the Digital Design Departments research profile combining design thinking with technological tools, material exploration, digital media and co-design. 
 
Job Description 
The candidate should have strong theoretical, methodological and design-oriented qualifications in the core of interaction design and with interests in the design, construction, and use of interactive artifacts. Good candidates should be qualified in 2-3 of the following areas: 

  • Sketching and prototyping of interactive artifacts in support of material application and speculation, with an emphasis on investigating use through real-world deployments. This should also include an understanding of and experience with a variety of digital materials from Arduino to Web-oriented tools. 
  • Interaction Design research methods and practices including design-driven, expert-led and participatory design-oriented approaches, and theories about interaction and design, for example in relation to recent developments in design research, critical approaches to design, and design anthropology. 
  • Programming of interactions using e.g. Processing, JavaScript, Python, including openFrameworks and UX wireframing tools, and the ability to teach in these areas.   
 
Applicants are expected to describe the field of research they want to pursue. 
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to research (including PhD supervision for candidates on associate professor level), teaching, and research funding. Applicants should provide a research plan stating how their current and future research relates to the field of Interaction Design in general and to specific areas of ongoing research in the Interaction Design research group. Applicants should be able to do excellent research-based teaching and supervision in a variety of subjects related to interaction design on bachelors, masters and PhD level. Experience with curriculum development and educational management will be taken into account in the evaluation of the candidate. 
 
The ideal candidate should document: 
  • Publications of research at a high international level in well-respected peer-reviewed venues  
  • Competences in developing and conducting teaching that is well received by students 
  • A record of contributing to the goals of the institutions in which he/she has worked, for example, participation in committees, etc.  
 
In addition, candidates for the position as associate professorship should be able to:  
  • Attract external research funding 
  • Supervise PhD students 
  • Read/speak a Scandinavian language (or have the willingness to learn Danish) 
 
General information 
The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more than 70 full-time academics. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialisation of IT.

The assistant professorship is a temporary position for up to 4 years with the possibility of extension. The position requires academic qualifications at PhD level. 
 
Salary 
Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).

  • Documentation of pedagogical experience and teaching record within one or more of the teaching areas listed for the position 
  • For the position as associate professor: documentation of both a) received observation and feedback on teaching, b) pedagogical training courses as a teacher, c) a formal written assessment of teaching competence and d) a teaching record within one or more of the teaching areas listed for the position

The applicant will be assessed according to the Appointment Order from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of 25 April 2008.
