Communication Manager

Purpose of the Position:

Stakeholders:Predominantly Nordic stakeholders (internal & external), and EST-C Comms team with EST-C Comms network.

Working in close collaboration, with the Nordic External Affairs & Communication director to create, implement and manage corporate, internal affiliate communications programmes in line with our business strategy that:

  • Raise Astellas’ corporate profile and brand, to predominantly external stakeholders (some activities will be mirrored to internal audiences) via multiple channel approach
  • Champion brand guidelines, providing advice to colleagues and agencies to ensure effective, compliant engagement with their audience’s other functions and brand teams
  • Implement and support a programme of communications activities to externalise our corporate narrative, build our reputation and support the delivery of our corporate strategy with our external stakeholders including amplification of government affairs and patient partnerships activity
  • Support on issues preparation and management activities across our region, providing communications counsel and support to leaders and colleagues as appropriate
  • Input into strategies for effective and compliant interactions with third parties such as industry groups and patient organisations (where appropriate)
  • Core Tasks, Responsibilities and Authority:


  • Embed Compliance Culture across all Regions of the business ensuring “Integrity in Action” is actively applied in all initiatives.
  • Ensure Communications Function(s) strictly adopt a culture of ethics and compliance: leading by example and appropriately challenging non-compliance.
  • Ensure adherence to Astellas policies relating to Ethics and Compliance standards and interactions with Healthcare Professionals (HCPs), Healthcare Organisations (HCOs) and Patient Organisations (POs).

    To develop robust communications strategies that:

  • Are aligned to our EST-C & Global Communications strategy and Corporate Disclosure guidance and enhance the profile and reputation of the organisation with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Specifically:
  • Drive social media editorial process, with agency input, to manage channel news flow and timely content to reach and engage key stakeholders on our business/ key interests
  • Embed social media governance practices such as channel access/ monitoring/ listening and PV reporting, materials approval/ checks, rapid response process, smart social media use with team/ agency/ content owners/ affiliate communicator network.
  • In close collaboration with Marketing and Brand teams drive Product PR and disease awareness campaigns. Implement programmes generate appropriate media relations and leadership visibility opportunities that support the corporate and / or brand communications objectives
  • Localise, prepare and maintain written materials such as messaging materials, Q&A documents, media backgrounders, corporate factsheets and social media content
  • Project manage cross functional communication initiatives, managing multiple internal and external stakeholders, including third parties, working to tight timelines and ensuring timely delivery that is on budget
  • Support/lead on issues/crisis management counsel as appropriate to key internal stakeholders should an issue occur
  • Develop reactive and proactive communications materials to effectively manage issues before they escalate
  • The individual appointed will be required to support Internal Communications in the following areas:


  • Plan, drive, create & develop Nordic internal communication including relevant channels.
  • Develop and edit stories for internal publications and microsites (myAstellas), managing timelines and legal approval of content
  • Maintains relevant sections of myAstellas, our intranet, to ensure that content is always relevant and up to date, specifically for external communications activities

    The appointed individual will:

  • Understand how to plan, drive, manage and juggle multiple programmes and priorities
  • Work cross functionally (and internationally) with key internal stakeholders within our remit, affiliate and region to achieve appropriate approvals of materials and manage issues that may occur with the process autonomously
  • Ensure a consistent and solutions-orientated approach
  • Take ownership in supporting and facilitating communications to ensure local success of PR programmes and internal initiatives rolled out centrally.
  • Benchmark and measure existing and new communications activities implemented and review how these can be improved upon
  • Lead development of agency briefs / proposals and issues documents to support the department’s objectives and outputs
  • Work with appointed external agencies to ensure they deliver on agreed outputs for live projects, on budget and within specified timelines
  • Review and disseminate relevant media coverage daily with relevant internal (and in some instances external) stakeholders
  • Input social media metrics into team reporting/ dashboard
  • Fluent English in writing and speaking
  • Proactively keep informed and up-to-date on the relevant industry codes of compliance and all related updates
  • Represent the Corporate Communications team at external events as needed
  • Other such duties as may be reasonably required by the business
  • Mandatory Compliance requirements:

  • To be aware of Astellas' Group Code of Conduct and associated policies and procedures and other applicable laws, codes and regulations.
  • Clarify and seek guidance as required, and raise any concerns, in a timely manner, with relevant manager which may include reference to the Ethics and Compliance Team and/or Ethics and Compliance Helpdesk.
  • Undertake and comply with relevant mandatory Ethics and Compliance training and updates to maintain personal awareness all training to be undertaken in a timely manner.
  • Be aware of and comply with, the Astellas Way and Astellas Competences, in terms of expected values and behaviors, in addition to Astellas’ HR policies, procedures and guidelines.

    Specific Physical Abilities:

    Willing and able to undertake international and European travel (including overnight stays)

  • Proven experience working autonomously in a communications function incl Social Media channels.
  • Track record of leading planning process with excellent organisational and collaboration skills.
  • Pharma sector experience with strong customer focus; in multi-disciplinary, matrix and cross-cultural settings.
  • Proven compliance expertise to understand and comply with industry laws and relevant regulations.
  • Coaching and collaboration skills to interact with all levels of personnel to achieve shared goals.
  • Proven ability to influence, (appropriately) challenge and engage diverse senior stakeholders.
  • Fluent in written and verbal business English
  • Graduate or equivalent professional qualification and/or proven expertise.
