Consultancy of respiratory medicine at Department of Respiratory Medicine, Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital combined with a clinical professorship in Respiratory Medicine with special focus on Severe Asthma

A clinical position as consultant of respiratory medicine at the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of Respiratory Medicine with special focus on Severe Asthma at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

With this new position the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital wishes to strengthen our leadership in research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department is the only exclusively respiratory department in the Capital Region of Copenhagen. The department has an acute intake of 3600 patients per year and an in-patient ward consisting of 40 beds, of which 4 are designated to patients in need of intermediate care. The department also has an out-patient clinic with approximately 20.000 visits per year, half of which are in our dedicated specialist out-patient clinic, the other half in our clinic for investigating pulmonary cancer, both of these consisting of integrated teams of doctors and nurses. In all, there are close to 140 employees, including 13 consultants.
As most of our in-patients are acutely hospitalized, the department is a significant collaboration partner within the area of emergency medicine, and the hospital is one of four acute hospitals in the Capital Region of Denmark.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department, relevant to this position
The department handles a wide range of patients with respiratory diseases including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung diseases, allergy, patients with lung infiltrates, patients with need for pulmonary rehabilitation and many other aspects of respiratory medicine. The department has a leading position both nationally and internationally in regards to the diagnosis and treatment of difficult to diagnose and difficult to treat asthma, as in elite athletes. Further, the department covers a wide range of invasive pulmonary procedures in patients suspected of lung cancer including bronchoscopy, transthoracic needle aspiration lung biopsy, endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) and esophageal ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA).
The professorship in severe asthma will strengthen the area of translational research in asthma disease mechanisms and novel treatments towards severe asthma. This area links bedside clinical phenotypes of difficult asthma to underlying immunological and physiological pathways, with the aim to understand the heterogeneity of this disease, and to identify novel targets for more specific anti-asthmatic treatments. The research area includes aberrant immune responses in asthma, including interactions between the adaptive immune response related to allergic asthma, and activation of the innate immune response.

Research and teaching
With the new position as consultant in internal medicine and respiratory medicine and clinical professor of severe asthma, the Department of Respiratory Medicine wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.

The department has a longstanding leading position in scientific research and education at a high international level. This applies to both the focus areas mentioned and in other connections. We have a close and fruitful collaboration with researchers both in clinical departments and in universities in Denmark and in other countries. We wish to strengthen this through the new position as consultant and clinical professor.

Applicants must be board-certified specialist in respiratory medicine.
