Data & Applied Scientist

Microsoft Quantum is dedicated to solving the world’s intractable problems and forever altering our economic, industrial, academic, and societal landscape. In just hours or days, a quantum computer can solve complex problems that would otherwise take billions of years for today’s computers to solve! This has massive implications for research in healthcare, energy, environmental systems, smart materials, and more. Simply put, Microsoft brings the only scalable quantum system to the broadest set of customers.  

 

Microsoft’s Quantum research group is exploring ways to build a full-stack quantum computer and has become the world’s center of expertise on topological quantum computing. The research effort includes a staff of theoretical and experimental teams around the world, who have been designing and optimizing all aspects of the quantum computer, from topological qubit designs, to cryogenic control and readout circuitry, to runtime software and quantum language compilers. This effort requires research and development of new ideas how to encompass both Quantum and Classical Machine  applied to either controlling, designing or characterizing quantum system, as well as exploration of algorithmic approaches to optimizing the design of quantum devices.  

Responsibilities

  • Actively contribute to a global team building and using next-generation tools to design, measure, model and characterize topological qubits 
  • Facilitate structured data capture from pre-growth processing, material growth, and structural characterization of Quantum Computer Fabrication. Coordinate with domain experts to de?ne key metrics at all stages of the process ?ow, and development of automated routines and methods for their extraction 
  • In collaboration with top theorists and experimentalists from other Microsoft Quantum sites, process and analyze large multidimensional data sets from experiments to find Majorana quasi-particles, as building blocks for a quantum computer. Similarly mine simulated data sets to gain insight into how Majoranas could manifest in experiments 
  • Develop data analysis work?ows based on literate programming and reproducible research principles to automate complex analysis of multidimensional datasets. 
  • Share developed code in Python modules in Git (Azure DevOps) 
  • Actively manage priorities between multiple requests in a fast-paced environment.  

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:  

  • Master’s degree in  Physics[preferred]/Mathematics/Statistics/EE/CS or equivalent. PhD preferred 
  • Experience processing large data sets, using modern Data Science tools such as Python, R, Spark, etc.  
  • Experience applying machine learning techniques, supervised and unsupervised, to solve real world problems. 
  • Preferred: working experience developing algorithms for image/video processing for automatic feature extraction and characterization 
  • Understanding of DOE and statistical concepts and practices 
  • Familiarity with data acquisition frameworks and analytically informed data management systems 
  • A few years' experience using Python in a professional setting
