Data scientist for the National Health Data Science Sandbox for Training and Research, Aarhus University

The National Data Sandbox initiative is hiring a data scientist at Aarhus University to aid in developing a national "sandbox" infrastructure in health data science. The position is for three years, starting 1 April 2021 or as soon as possible

.The National Health Data Science Sandbox for Training and Research
Research and training in health data science are greatly needed, but it is complicated by the person-sensitive nature of health data. We are establishing a national infrastructure, a “sandbox”, in which students and researchers can work with data without any risk of leaking personal information. In the sandbox, users will have access to synthetic data that looks like real data as well as tools, computer programs and supercomputing power, exactly as if they worked on a real project, and therefore it will be easy to move from the sandbox to real applications. The Sandbox is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and is a national collaboration between Danish Universities and headed by Professor Anders Krogh at the Center for Health Data Science at UCPH. The Sandbox project is currently coordinating recruitment of staff at all partners:

  • KU: Coordinates tools and data for transcriptomics, single cell and image analysis
  • AAU: Coordinates health register data and tools
  • AU: Coordinates tools and data in genomics and online teaching tools
  • SDU: Coordinates tools and data for proteomics and integration with U-cloud
  • DTU: Coordinates data and tool curation, social media and wearables data, interoperability

Data Scientist
The main task of the data scientists is to develop the sandbox infrastructure. You will be responsible for developing part of the infrastructure and for supporting users. You will work closely together with four other data scientists at the other participating universities, and you will be mainly responsible for the subject field of genomics and its associated tools. You will also be involved in develop and teach online courses and workshops in the field, and promote the Sandbox initiative nationally and internationally in close collaboration with the overall coordinator at University of Copenhagen.

Your academic profile:
You should hold a MSc or a PhD degree (or similar level of experience) in bioinformatics, computer science, biostatistics, or a field of science relating to data science. You are expected to have:
  • Knowledge of algorithms and data structures, and strong programming skills in one of the major languages
  • Experience or willingness to learn Python
  • Familiarity with Linux
Additionally, it will be an advantage if you can tick off some of these points:
  • You have experience with:
    • Genomics/full genome sequence analysis and pipelines
    • Single cell genomics
  • You are familiar with sensitive medical data and GDPR compliance rules
  • You are well-versed in working with large datasets, e.g., storage, data management, and computing
Valued personal competencies:
  • Independent, creative and flexible
  • Outgoing and enjoying to provide advice within your field of expertise
  • Proficiency in English

About National Health Data Science at Aarhus University:
The person employed will be part of Aarhus University health data science activities hosted at the Faculty of Health and the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The workplace will be at the cross-faculty Bioinformatic Research Centre in close interaction with the software development staff at the GenomeDK ( high-performance computing cluster facility, researchers in bioinformatics and data science at both Faculties. The working environment is interdisciplinary and collaborative. The person employed will also interact closely with people employed in similar positions at the other Danish Universities and with the overall coordinator of the Sandbox employed at University of Copenhagen
