  • PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, is a group of more than 6000 chemicals. They are ubiquitous in the environment, difficult to be degraded, and potentially toxic. There has been many occasions of PFAS contamination in drinking water or consumer foods in US, EU, and also in Denmark. The main issue with PFAS chemicals is the lack of information on exactly which PFAS has been used in what products.

The aim of this project is to profile potential PFAS present in home-produced and commercial eggs using a deep profiling approach using advanced mass spectrometry technique: LC – Orbitrap – High Resolution MS. This knowledge is essential to assist the authorities in keeping high food safety standards, as well as providing more insights into the current state of PFAS in Danish animal products.

. To achieve this aim, the student will:

- Develop and perform analytical chemistry experiments using LC – Orbitrap technology via targeted MS and MS/MS screening approach

- Analyze the obtained data using the cheminformatic software Compound Discoverer

- Interpret high resolution MS and MS/MS data using chemistry and mass spectrometry knowledge.

- Discuss and summarize the results then compile a thesis report.

- It is expected that the outcome of this project will be spiral into a scientific paper.
