For 5G-NR mobile communication a key enabler for achieving higher throughput and lower latency is utilizing the available spectrum above 6-7 GHz (mmWave). For mmWave transmissions to work efficient beamforming is required as it can be used to effectively mitigate the impact of noise in multi-user interference scenarios.
Beamforming dramatically increases the complexity and processing requirements of Radio Units (RU) in the mobile network. In addition to this the O-RAN standardization is undergoing changes for definition of a new class to further enhance the performance by offloading processing elements from the base station sites.
This project is a study into equalization techniques for a mmWave beamformer in collaboration with Analog Devices A/S and DTU Electro. A process essential to cancel out the noise impact of the over-the-air transmission. This project includes both studies into the theory of equalizations and the application of it through the development of digital designs.
