330058174PhD fellowship in Medicinal Chemistry/RadiochemistryRobot Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND) University of Copenhagen Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology is offering a three-year PhD fellowship in Medicinal Chemistry Radiochemistry. The PhD fellowship is financed by the Danish Research Council. The fellowship is available from 15 October 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. Project description g-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is a naturally occurring compound in the mammalian brain. Already in 1982 it was reported that GHB binds with high affinity to a specific protein in the forebrain, but the molecular identity and functional relevance of this binding site has remained elusive. However, we have recently identified a GHB high-affinity target, which constitute a potential biomarker for PET imaging. The aim of this PhD project is to identify small-molecule candidates and develop suitable PET radiotracers by targeting the newly identified binding sites. Availability of such tools will enable early diagnose and optimal therapeutic intervention in implicated disease states. The tasks during this project will thus include ligand design, chemical synthesis, radiochemistry and characterization of target compounds. The PhD fellowship is financed by Independent Research Fund Denmark Technology and Production Sciences. The fellowship is available from October 1st 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. Project description The aim of the project is the development of new treatments for non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). The use of mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) enables very detailed characterization of laser-mediated delivery of chemotherapeutical drugs to tumors with drug detection, localization and quantification fully integrated with histological classification of the tissue. This involves de-velopment of new quantitative MSI methods as well as a deeper characterization of the tumor tis-sue by MSI, identifying biomarker compounds for different types of healthy and tumor tissue. The knowledge obtained in these studies will be utilized in development of real-time tissue identifica-tion during laser surgery on skin cancer based on mass spectral data.
