The University of Southern Denmark invites applications for open positions in the field of Soft Robotics at the levels of full professor, associate professor and assistant professor.  The positions are based in Odense and will be hosted by the Embodied Systems for Robotics and Learning (ESRL) unit of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute.

ESRL's current research programme focusses, inter alia, on biomimetic and bio-inspired robotics, in which Nature's exploitation of unconventional materials and solution principles is of considerable interest.  Unlike conventional robotic solutions where strength, precision, accuracy and repeatability are principal design criteria, Nature uses "soft" materials in interesting combinations to provide bodies well-adapted to their common tasks.

In this light, ESRL is setting up a Centre for Soft Robotics in which the design criteria for soft robot solutions can be explored and exploited.  In short, we aim for a systems approach to soft robots, building on our expertise in embodied artificial intelligence and biomimetic modelling, that takes soft robots as first-class artefacts and considers how to design and build them.  Specifically, we wish to elucidate what are the appropriate design criteria for soft robots; how well-adapted bodies can be designed and deployed for given tasks, including collaborative industrial tasks; how electronics and
computing can be integrated into soft robotic solutions; and how both local and distal sensing can be exploited by such bodies.

The new Centre will work closely with existing research groups in ESRL and also with the SDU UAS Centre (for example on flapping flight
drones) and SDU's advanced manufacturing, composite and nano-materials programmes.

The ideal applicants for these positions will have:

  • a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline, with experience of interdisciplinary research;
  • a strong research and publication record commensurate with the seniority of the position sought;
  • a familiarity with techniques and problems of making and working with soft robots -- experience in biological modelling, materials science or embodied artificial intelligence and morphological computation will be especially relevant;
  • a sensible but challenging research proposal focussed on systems-level aspects of soft robotics -- sensing, electronics and system design are especially interesting to us;
  • documented teaching experience in relevant undergraduate and graduate programmes;
  • a proven ability to attract research funding, again commensurate with the seniority of the sought position;
  • a commitment to basic science, but with appropriate experience of interaction and collaboration with the industrial or commercial worlds.

Requirements for the position

Employment as an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor requires scientific qualifications at PhD level.

Applications will be assessed by an expert committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the Faculty.

As part of the overall assessment of an applicant's qualifications, the applicant may be called for interview.

Conditions of employment

The successful applicant(s) will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of
Professional Associations.

Employment as an Associate or Full Professor is a permanent position.

Employment as Assistant Professor is a 3-year temporary position. The employment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.
