The Interdisciplinary Centre for Climate Change (iClimate) at Aarhus University, Roskilde, Denmark invites applications for a position as full professor. The position is to be filled by March 1st 2020 or as soon as possible, subject to negotiation. For the right candidate the faculty will be able to provide a start package to ease the transfer of a research group.

Aarhus University, Science and Technology (AU/ST) have established an interdisciplinary Centre for Climate Change (iClimate) with the purpose of contributing to solve our grand societal challenges within Climate Change and Climate systems via excellent research. iClimate has the ambition to significantly increase our basic understanding of the climate system by interdisciplinary and close collaboration between research teams with different scientific backgrounds and expertise. The Centre will expand our understanding of the underlying processes driving climate change and related impacts on the global scale, in the Arctic and the global/Arctic interactions. Understanding the underlying processes is vital for development within three major areas of societal importance; agriculture, power production/consumption, and urban systems, which holds the key for significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions/fluxes or even CO2 extraction and for stimulating climate adaptation (see also www.iclimate.au.dk/).

The selected candidate will be affiliated with the Section for Atmospheric Environment at the Department of Environmental Science, which is an interdisciplinary department under the Faculty of Science & Technology at Aarhus University. The expertise ranges from physics, chemistry, microbiology and mathematical modelling to social science, geography, economics and policy analysis. Both basic and applied research is conducted related to some of the major challenges facing society, such as pollution and pollution control mechanisms, management of land, soil, water, air and biodiversity, protection of ecosystem services, climate change, and energy systems. Advisory services within these areas are offered to ministries and other stakeholders. Currently, about 150 staff and PhD-students are working at the department. Description of the position
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development and management of the center and to the fulfillment of the overall ambition to significantly increase our understanding of the climate system by interdisciplinary and close collaboration between research teams with different scientific backgrounds and expertise.

The new professor will take a leading role in the future building of the department of environmental science with equality and diversity at its core. This includes talent development within the area by supervising graduate students, post docs and tenure track scientist.

The successful candidate is expected to build a high-class research environment within climate and earth system modelling and is expected to contribute to model developments describing new understandings of the forcing and drivers of the climate system from anthropogenic and natural origins at global, regional and national scales. Climate modeling with regards to impacts on the Arctic or agriculture in Denmark and globally are of specific interest due to Aarhus University leading role in these research fields.

The professor will likely assess relevant scenarios including high-end in terms of socio-economic pathway (SSPs) and Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs), including overshooting challenges. Scenario and sensitivity model studies showing the importance of the different climate drivers are important in order to make recommendations to stakeholders. The professor will co-develop climate services and site-specific climate risk assessments for and with end-users from the public and private sectors.

The successful candidate will be part of the atmospheric modelling group in Department of Environmental Science that have a strong research environment within modelling of atmospheric chemistry, including studies of the interactions between climate change and air chemistry. This position is central for the overall coordination of the interdisciplinary work within iClimate and with other national and international research groups.

Qualification requirements
The position requires experience within the field of climate change and climate modelling. The ideal candidate has experience with interdisciplinary science as well as experience with interactions with the surrounding society. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to have strong international networks and capabilities of building networks at international and national level.

Applicants should have several years of highly productive post-graduate research after completed PhD, and strong publication experience. A significant track-record of successful external research funding, as well as a significant publication record in high-level, international, peer-reviewed journals are required. Publications with high-level publishers (according to BFI (The Danish Bibliometric Research Indicator) of the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science) are also recognized.

A demonstrated research leadership and ability to attract large research projects and to successfully supervise PhD students and Master theses/Bachelor projects is required. Experience in conducting consultancy/advisory projects and/or developing and delivering high-quality undergraduate/graduate teaching is desirable. The successful applicant must have proven extensive international research collaboration (e.g. joint papers and proposals) and have an ability to provide inspiration and guidance for colleagues. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary academic environment. In addition, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate the potential to be a strong role model for values of equality, diversity and inclusion. The position, therefore, requires a highly motivated scientist who is comfortable working in teams and believes in creating an attractive work/life balance in her/his research group.
