Global Biodiversity Manager, Aarhus, Düsseldorf, Leeds or Stockholm

Want to translate your expertise in agricultural biodiversity into a tangible concept that will enable Arla dairy farmers to demonstrate and further improve biodiversity on their farms?

And would you like to collaborate with an exciting network of international colleagues and stakeholders to make it happen?

“We work with around 10,000 farms across 7 countries. So with you onboard, Arla Foods might just be able to claim the title of the world’s largest biodiversity producer,” says Global Head of Member & Customer Programmes, Torben Greve Himmelstrup.

About the job

Along with 25 passionate colleagues, you will become part of the Member and Customer Programme department working from Sweden, the UK, Germany and Denmark. In close collaboration with the dairy farmers who own Arla Foods, we work to ensure and continuously improve milk quality, animal welfare and sustainability across the 10,000 dairy farms located in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK

Joining the Farm Sustainability team, you will help us deliver on Arla’s Green Ambition and our 5-year sustainability strategy. Recently, we have developed and launched a comprehensive climate programme to monitor and reduce carbon footprints on Arla farms – and now, we need you to help us succeed on the biodiversity agenda as well.

Preferably, you will be working from either Düsseldorf, Germany; Leeds, UK; Stockholm, Sweden; or Aarhus, Denmark. As the global owner of the biodiversity programme, you will:

  • Develop a short- and long-term biodiversity strategy for Arla farmers
  • Drive the development of tangible concepts and solutions to support dairy farmers in documenting and improving biodiversity on their farms and ensure that they can be implemented into our current IT platforms
  • Ensure that the Arla approach to the biodiversity challenge is anchored in science, aligned across countries and backed up by NGOs and local authorities
  • Lead and facilitate the biodiversity conceptualisation and associated decision process in the democratic process which is in the DNA of our cooperative
  • Support the decision process and present the concept for internal approval to ensure that it can be commercialised by Arla business and is backed up by management and farm owners
  • Design and drive ongoing engagement, communication and training for Member Service, farm owners and stakeholders supporting farmers in making biodiversity decisions and actions on the farms

Who are you?

You have a strong academic background, and we imagine that you bring significant experience with and knowledge about biodiversity, preferably in an agricultural context – maybe even within dairy farming. You might have a background in science and research, from an NGO or perhaps as an environmental advisor, so you know about the practical challenges related to agricultural biodiversity.

You understand that the procedures, strategic considerations and complex stakeholder networks involved in delivering on a vision of this magnitude takes time and diplomacy if it is to be anchored right in the organisation. And you are up for that challenge. Moreover:

  • It is a great plus if you have used your knowledge e.g. in a consultancy role where you have developed practical concepts and solutions for improving biodiversity
  • You have great stakeholder management and communication skills, so you can engage others and get them onboard your vision
  • You communicate effortlessly in English in both speech and writing

What do we offer?

We offer you the opportunity to put your academic toolbox and knowledge to the test and develop something very tangible that can be used to make a true difference on Arla farms – whether it comes in the form of monitoring tools, guides, catalogues, biodiversity checks on-farm or something else entirely.

As we have already created a successful climate programme, you can let yourself inspire by the results as well as the processes and learnings involved here. Furthermore, you will get all the support you need from our global sustainability lead and relevant colleagues from the farm sustainability team. But in the end, you are the expert on finding the best solutions for inspiring Arla farmers to create real biodiversity impact on dairy farms across 7 countries.

Application and contact

If you want to drive innovation and help shape the industry, then seize this exciting opportunity. Please apply as soon as possible and no later than 18 October.  Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

COVID-19 Notice:

We are busy producing dairy products so we can continue #fillingtheshelves and #feedingthenation. Recruiting talent to Arla thus stays one of our top priorities also during these difficult times. Necessity is the mother of invention, so we have moved to virtual hiring and onboarding processes so we enable candidates and our recruitment teams to get close while respecting social distancing.
