Introduction

We are welcoming applications for the position of Head of Ethics (including GCSE Citizenship and IB Global Politics). The successful applicant will have a proven track record in the classroom as well as having a desire to continually develop classroom practice, both in their own classes and across the department.

The school is seeking to appoint to this position for January 2021. Candidates interested in this post are encouraged to visit our school and see us in action during a normal school day, if this is possible. We are extremely proud of our pupil’s outstanding behaviour, our caring teachers’ high standards and expectations for our children and the excellent learning happening at The Malling School. This is centered around our school’s ethos that we refer to as ‘The Malling School Way’.

Head of Ethics (including GCSE Citizenship and IB Global Politics)

The Head of Ethics will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of the curriculum in a range of subjects as outlined above. This includes the implementation and development of the Key stage 3 provision for Ethics, which includes delivering elements of PSHE, FBV, SMSC and the Kent Agreed syllabus for Religious Education. At Key Stage 4, we currently offer GCSE Citizenship and at Key Stage 5 we deliver the International Baccalaureate Global Politics course. These are all areas of the curriculum that we wish to develop further and the successful applicant will share a passion for curriculum development in these areas. As well as curriculum development, the successful candidate will also line manage a small team of teachers in these subjects and will share responsibility for developing effective teaching, learning and meaningful assessment.

Personal Development & Character Education

‘The Malling School Way’ can be summarized in three words: Caring, Determined and Reflective. We are looking for a member of staff who shares and values these character traits and is committed to developing our students’ character so they can develop on a personal level.

The School has recently been awarded the Association of Character Education (ACE) ‘School of Character’ Kitemark. We are extremely proud of this and will be looking to be awarded the ACE Kitemark Plus accreditation in the near future.

Our Personal Development & Character Curriculum is delivered daily through our Period 1 programme called ‘The Malling School Way’ lesson. This curriculum is planned and delivered incorporating whole-school collective reading, lessons about inspirational figures from the past and present and PSHCE lessons.

Teaching, Learning and Professional Development

The Malling School prides itself on developing highly effective teachers and supporting improvements through meaningful professional development. We have no formal lesson observations and a strong open culture of improving our teaching together through regular, low stakes developmental learning walks, the new staff mentoring programme and constructive use of departmental time. CPD also includes weekly pedagogy-linked lecturettes and opportunities to work with peers on the development of effective teaching & learning practice. Leaders are also developed, with regular and supportive line management as well as a thorough programme of Middle Leadership meetings to further improve all aspects of practice.

Our strategy to improve outcomes for our students is not through short term unsustainable Y11 intervention but through developing our curriculum together and continually reflecting and improving our daily practice in every classroom for every year group.

Positive Behaviour Support

We have a very strong behaviour for learning policy that means low-level disruption is not tolerated, allowing teachers to do what we do best- teach. All staff receive regular ‘positive behaviour support’ training to ensure we are consistent in our application of the policy. Students are very clear about our high expectations of behaviour and attitude in every classroom. The key to the success of the policy is the proactive targeting of poor work ethic and low-level disruption by every teacher. Students that slow down the pace of learning are transferred out of the lesson and collected by our Senior Leaders.
