The IT University of Copenhagen is seeking a Head of Department for its Digital Design Department.

The University is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The University has a multidisciplinary research environment with faculty, centers, groups, projects, and PhD students from many different IT research areas. All faculty members belong to one of three Departments: Business IT Department, Computer Science Department, or Digital Design Department. Please consult our website for more information.

The Digital Design Department contains more than 90 staff, hereof 35 assistant, associate, or full professors, more than 15 PhD students, around 20 part-time lecturers, and several postdocs, research assistants and student workers.

The department consists of three sections: Digital Society and Participation, Design Research, and Play, Culture and AI. The Digital Society and Participation section do research within and on participatory design, infrastructuring, social network analysis and digital inequalities. The Design Research section use design and design methods to explore the world as is and to push the way we understand and use technology in new directions. The Play, Culture, and AI Section research digital media from social, cultural, creative and technological perspectives, with a special focus on games, artificial intelligence, and social media.

The Digital Design Department is in charge of the BSc study program Digital Design and Interactive Technologies, and the two MSc study programmes Games, and Digital Design and Interactive Technologies. More than 220 students are enrolled annually on the three study programmes.

The Department have an equal gender balance among students and among faculty.

The Head of the Digital Design Department is part of the management of the IT University and expected to contribute to fulfilling the mission of the university as well as implementing its strategy. The Head of the Digital Design Department will refer to the Vice-Chancellor.

Tasks
The Head of the Digital Design Department will have the following tasks and responsibilities:

  • Responsibility of achieving the departments targets concerning volume and quality of teaching, publications, and external research funding
  • Personnel management
  • Recruitment and retention of excellent faculty
  • Resource management to ensure the best possible education and research,
  • Change management in connection with the development of the department
  • Leadership of the department’s development of educations
  • Leadership of the department’s research, to ensure outstanding quality and secure external funding
The Head of the Digital Design Department must lead the development of the department, also exploiting the possibilities for interaction and collaboration with external partners. Internal cooperation with other department heads is a central part of the job. The Head of the Digital Design Department will have budget responsibility for the department.

Competencies
Candidates for the position must be able to document academic qualifications at the associate or full professor level and must have:

  • Experience working at the associate or full professor level at a research institution for at least 5 years
  • Experience with personnel and research management
  • A visionary approach to both research and education
  • The ability to translate visions into well designed processes of change involving faculty
  • Ability to motivate and inspire faculty through engagement and effective communication
  • Commitment to ensuring sound finances and efficient use of resources
  • An international orientation
  • A strong capability to collaborate
Candidates must be able to read and speak a Scandinavian language or be willing to learn Danish.

Terms of employment
The position will be filled primo 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a six-year, fixed term position with the possibility of extension. The extension may be negotiated as a return to a permanent faculty position with normal teaching and research responsibilities after the fixed termed position as Head of Department has expired.

Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associates (AC), including the entries related to deans and heads of department. The IT University is prepared to negotiate an allowance in addition to the basic salary based on qualifications and job requirements.
