Upcycling biogenic gases for sustainable biomethane production

Background
Syngas biomethanation is a biologically mediated process having methane as the final targeted product. In the past years, syngas biomethanation has gained increased attention because it can be integrated into existing infrastructure and improve sustainability metrics. However, CO can be toxic to anaerobic microbiome. Thus, alternative strategies to increase conversion efficiencies have gained increased attention. A challenge to be addressed is the poor liquid mass transfer and the low efficiency of the diffusion devices. Despite fixed-bed reactors have been already explored to immobilize microbial communities, challenges are still faced (e.g. bubble formation, low gas solubility, low surface area).

Aim
In this project, we target on developing innovative biotechnological solutions to enhance syngas biomethanation.

Approach
The impact of pH, temperature and gas partial pressure, as well as carriers and additives on reactor’s performance, will be initially tested on batch reactors. The microbial community will be analysed since the function of microbes is vital for syngas biomethanation. Trickling bed or air-lift reactors will be tested to maximize continuous mode methanation. Co- and contra- flow of gas will be examined in relation to trickling flow. Gas chromatography will be used to monitor gas composition changes and volatile fatty acids accumulation.

The project will take place at the Bio Conversions research group (BioCon) at DTU Chemical & Biochemical Engineering (DTU KT).
